Tom Jones, Des'ree and John Simms comment on Prince Some interesting things said in the Jo Whiley programme about Prince
which I thought were worth repeating; interesting the different impressions the 2 who met him got of him,and they had ALL seen him live! Tom Jones: I've met him a couple of times, he was very quiet, I can't say I know him, who does, maybe his wife, he was aloof, we never talked for long, but he was very cool Des'ree: I think the guy is a groundbreaking artist, he's this magical concoction of mystery, an enigma, and intense energy. I met him at the Brits, this huge bouncer came up and said Prince would like to meet you, so we went to his limo, he spoke non-stop for 30 minutes, he was very wise and grounded, gave me good advice which I still adhere to to this day, about being true to your self, your artistry, not compromising yourself, he said most artists have battles with their record companies, on a creative note, but just follow your gut, your instinct, we talked about working together but nothing happened after because I was on the road and he was busy with his album. to me he was very cool, I don't think of just his music, I think about him and what he presents John Simms: I saw him live, at his Lovesexy concerts, and what you don't get from his records that you see from him live is what an incredible guitarist he is, and an amazing stage presence Tom Jones: I saw him at a club in Berlin after the European MTV awards, just a small club, and the blues he was coming out with, the R & B, is more than what you hear in his records, down to basics, he wasn't trying to make a different kind of sound, he just wanted to do the stuff he loved, honestly, without trying to be commercial and I think that's where he really is, that's where his heart is, to be in a club, to sing and play guitar, that's where he really shines Tom Jones also said about his cover of Kiss:He did it sparse, which left me a lot of room to expand. when someone does a big arrangement its hard to take it elsewhere but he left me plenty of room with the recording he did, so I wasn't worried about trying to do it better | |
