More Princely musings from ?uestlove http://www.okayplayer.com...erface.htm
?uestlove of The Roots (who's currently playing with D'Angelo on in Europe), posted this in their tour diary, August 17th: uptown.....so this is what it's like in the dream factory huh? from the artist formerly known as b.r.o.the.r ?uestion on Aug 17 - 12:50 PM thanks 2 the following. bobby z.- wow. while the world cries about how great sheila was (and she was and still is), and while the world claims how great michael b.'s technique is ("shhh! break it down", is one of my favorite drum solo's in modern music), and while the world dances to kirky j's rhythms. you are and will always be my favorite drummer associated with prince. i know the anxiety you went through being one of the first drummers to bring computerized drumming to the stage. i studied those tapes and still do. and stand amazed that you hit those crash and ride cymbals, hand claps, and the tom toms and was still fast enough to sit down and find the off button only to then have to have your hand find the clap button in complete darkness and god forbid if you missed his "good gawd" to bring em back in. trust me. i heard the ice cream castle rehearsal tape. ("ice creeeeeam!!!!!") i heard the insults ("y'all having an off day?...this shit would never get on the radio") i know about your role as band spokesman....trust. i know. and just as d and i said tonight. i will say it again. we appreciate you so much, and you've done so much for our lives as a musician i know you feel that most cats are just thinkin about prince when they tell you how much they listened to you as a kid. please know that for each of y'all we got love. we are forever grateful. eric leeds- the white version of your brother (spitting image of al, 'cept red hair and an on the money ned flanders voice, but not as corny.....totally cool.) thank u 4 joining us 2nite. despite jacques frowning and moping over not soloing we were greatful. it's been a dream since the family album. and u made it come true. thank u for showing us the way. alan leeds- despite what others say.....there is nothing but love round here. thank you for preserving your history and sharing it with not just anybody, but to a selective few who know, understand, and apply it so that they too might learn from the past and build a better future with it. i for one am a better musician and man because of it. "thanks" is not enough. larry graham- so sorry that you couldn't stay. who would've known that profanity would've prompted you to leave halfway into the show. (ironic being as though you work with the man who once got me on punishment when i was 11 for playing a song that once contained the lines "i sincerely wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth".) hmmmm strange. it would've been nice hearing from you.....but you did what you have to. prince- so you planned an eygyptian vacation during our time up here. thanks 4 the paisley invite. it was an experience that could only make us stronger. it also showed another side of you that we don't get 2 c quite often. glad 2 c femi jiya back home after 17 some odd years. i hope u find what u r looking 4. everyone should b happy and enjoy life. eye just hope that one day u will find it. again. thanks. you taught us so much about ourselves, and showed us that we had strength we never knew exsisted. now get off that bullshit and put the revolution back together, and stop playin'.....again thanks. well needless to say. this was an important night. we were in the king's territory. and yeah we was nervous for a sec. "what will they think?" "who's on the guest list alan?" etc. and believe it or not. some tried to plant evil seeds to make us fall apart. but you know what? that shit only makes weak individuals crumble, and strong people monstrous and by no means are we weak people. we were so in the zone last night that i can't believe we didn't document it. the best part of last night was the validation of the cats that we grew up on. i was in such a rotten mood after the LA show it really didn't matter to me that sheila e. thought we were incredible. i felt bad and nothing she could say supported her theory. but last night? wooooo!!!!! d and i were like the ghetto matt damon, and ben afleck on oscar night. to hear bobby z, eric leeds, stokely (mind conmutherf@#$inditon) michael bland and a cast of others that we grew up on telling us that we "have the torch now....run for our lives". meant so much. d was in the rarest form i've ever seen him in in these past 8 months. tonight was a victory indeed. to bad some couldn't handle it. so this is what it's like in the dream factory huh? | |
