Report on last Friday's Paisley jam There was a jam at Paisley Park Studios this past Friday night (7-28-2000).
The doors opened promptly, which is a nice change of pace! Fairly good size crowd on hand. Although, as I have seen in the past, the crowd seems to be its biggest before the jam starts, then thins out considerably by the time the jam starts. Shortly after 3a, they played a new video for yet a new mix of Hot Wit U....the video is much the same as video most of us have seen. It looks like mostly clips of the first video presented in different order etc. There are also some clips that weren't included in the original, but were most certainly shot at the same time as the original video. Just more of a couple hot chicks rolling around in some cream on a bed....U know...that same old boring stuff! ) I would say the new mix of the song isn't vastly better or worse than the Nasty Girl mix. About 3:30a, Prince, Morris and Kirk took the stage....Prince was in a red suit which I believe had "love" on the right sleeve...I may be wrong here. Prince walked around the stage briefly then went to Habibi and sprayed it down....we could all sense a good thing coming....and he laid it on THICK! Jaws were droppin right, left, and center as he kicked our ars for a good 10 minutes...maybe longer. There was no joking around...no singing...he had an edge to him....seemed like he was p#ssed off about something? After he lit Habibi on fire he slowed things WAY down and sat at the piano. It was Kirk doing some very light drum work and Prince playing some beautiful stuff on the piano. Again, no singing....no nothing. Now, his emotion seemed to completely shift gears from "I'm gunna kick your ars"....to....."I'm gunna break down and cry any minute now"....just my opinion. But there really seemed to be something going on....some real emotion behind the playing. You could sense some of it in his facial expressions. Again, I could be wrong...but the vibe I got after these first two songs (jams really) was that something has recently happened in his life....but who knows....the music was great none-the-less. After he re-grouped from the piano work he had Kirk start a loop....which he slowed down a little at a time until I swear it was at half the tempo it started at. Then he walked over and grabbed the one eyed bass.....oh boy....here we go again....school is back in session! Again, simply amazing....funky bass. Shortly thereafter he did a song and wanted all of us to help him sing the chorus which was something like...."Let me have it all" or something like that...someone correct me if I'm wrong here. Around this time he invited MANY people up on stage to dance...the stage was packed with bodies groovin! He let most of them stay up there until they got tired! He then broke into Hot Wit U....which wasn't too bad live....I wouldn't think that would be a good song live, but it went pretty well! He gave the mic to the white rapper dude...sorry....forget his name....DVS or something? He's not horrible...not the greatest....I'm not a big rap fan, so I can't give a fair review here. Then Prince retreated back to the sound board for the night. The jam (and it was really just that....a jam....NOT a concert in any way...which is fine by me btw) was over and people were clearing out about 5:00a....just as I got into my car, a Prowler came racing down the road and pulling into the back parking lot...geeee....think it was Prince?! Maybe he forgot something at home? Anyway....this may be a bit wordy.....but it's all I know....until next week!! | |
