Wb only owns the masters to material that Prince released on album. All studio outtakes are owned by Prince himself, as well as earlier, unedited masters of material. ... Besides, we already know that this material doesn't fall under his WB contract, since much of the Crystal Ball set was made up of material from his Warner's days.

Yes. And the fact that Prince released an album named Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, with a title track recorded during his WB days but never released (and even mentioned in the lyrics to 200 Balloons, which was released under the WB contract) further proves this point.

Where I think the situation gets fuzzy is in his internet-only releases, such as the 2001 NPG Music Club, which released to members "Horny Pony" and "Thieves in the Temple (remix)", which were clearly covered under the WB contract. One has to wonder if WB is aware of those releases.

This from the PopBitch newsletter:

Prince seems to have cooled down from his dispute with label Warners, and is even talking of recording an album of 80s-style new material ready for the cinema release of Purple Rain: The Truth next summer.

This is a hoax.

WB still owns the rights to the movie Purple Rain, and Prince won't be buying the rights anytime soon.

Prince owns the rights to every single outtake recorded during the WB era, and he will never sell them to WB.

And by the way, you may as well invest in a good bootleg copy of Extra Lovable because this song will never be released as long as Prince is alive and still a JW.

First off, WB cannot do anything without Prince's approval. They can continue to release the original editions of his CDs, but they cannot go re-editing without Prince's involvement (this is why they went and released that shitty "Very Best Of.." Cd after Prince changed his mind on the whole "Prince: A Celebration" CD).

Warner's does own the master to "Purple Rain", but they wouldn't own any of the outtakes, so that would require Prince's involvment. Stranger things have happened, but we've heard so many of these rumours over the years, I'm not holding my breath.

We don't necessarily know this. We don't know what material Prince turned over to them while he was under contract. I know that under some deals (especially when an artist is in their early stages) the record company owns everything they record. That is the case for artists like Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, etc. That's why all of these unreleased tracks, outtakes, and rare recordings are locked up in the vaults of the record companies. I can imagine that is why Crystal Ball (NPG Version) had songs from 1985 to 1997. It probably contained tracks from that era because his contract prior to 1985 required him to relinquish rights to songs recorded before that time.

However, WB has the right to release whatever they want if they have copies of it. Anything that they have copies of that he recorded while with them can be issued with or without his consent.

being in a position to find out if Warner Brothers is in fact dealing with prince on this i have set out on a truth finding mission..

this is what i have gathered so far...

all parties agree Prince is definatley doing something with purple rain... but it has nothing to do with warner brothers...

infact two sources told me that warners no longer has the rights to purple rain...

one person believes he is actually re-recording the album for the anniversary and another source believes he may have the rights to re-release it on his own...

we'll see what more they find out.

Ur sources aren't correct. It takes longer than 20 years for an artist to get the opportunity to retreive their masters from the record company. I believe it is closer to 30 years. That's why Prince kept saying in interviews that in the near future, he will retreive his masters one by one. At whatever time, WB will give him the choice to either let them retain the rights to the recordings and they work out another monitary deal, or he can obtain the recordings and do what he wants with them.

Just to back this view up... the current Controversy dance white label & the I would Die For You cover version we've had in the UK, had to be cleared by Prince AND Warner Brothers. so i doubt the rights have reverted yet.

It is to my understanding from an interview i read by The Space Cowboy, that prince said no. and therefore he had to get someone who can sing just like him instead...and it turned out a lot cheaper too.

also, i'd have to back up the dude that said he gets the rights back after 20 years. Because, i vaguly remember NPGMC or what ever it was then, that it was announced that Prince owned For You again, next year Prince etc. so i think he should own 1999 again now.
from 1984, till now, it's 9 years...by next year (2004) he should have PR back too.
