Report on D'Angelo in Brixton last night



The guy was good. He was damn good. Played all the good
shit, from 'Shit, Damn, Motherfucker', 'Brown Sugar'
through 2 'Spanish Joint', 'Untitled' etc. His band was
goddam funky, with ?uestlove on drums - why doesn't Prince
employ him? A load of the songs just melted in2 10min+
long funk workouts with D'Angelo scatting and grooving on
top. His voice was awesome, with a range as diverse as
Prince's: one minute he was deep + sexy the next
crystal-clear falsetto. Supported by Slum Village, who
were also cool. He closed the show with an extended
version of 'Untitled' which brought the house down. He
also had a few moves reminiscent of the Time/Prince.
Prince should take a look at this + try 2 get back 2 his
old way of performing - with passion. Until then, they
should hook up 2gether more often, with ?uestlov on drums
+ Q-Tip making many appearances...now that would be worth
watching
