Blackwell had played for Cameo and Patti LaBelle before taking over the drum throne for Prince and the N.P.G. Since then, he's displayed his chops as a hard-grooving fusion/jazz drummer by an appearance at the Modern Drummer festival, and has released a DVD titled "Technique, Grooving, & Showmanship."
