First report on Friday's Paisley performance Last night was a great jam at Paisley. The doors opened sometime around 11:30 or midnight. It was a small crowd at first, so I was lucky enough to get right next to the stage. Around 1 am (after the bars closed?) the place got packed, and everyone kind of stood around staring at each other up near the Love4OneAnother stage while Prince's crew set all the shit up. 1:30 came. So did 2:00. 2:30. 3:00. When it was damn near 3:30, the DJ stopped spinning and Prince tossed on some concert footage of The Greatest Romance...from the Northrop show. It was pretty cool. Then, Larry, Kirk, and Morris hopped on stage and started jamming. Prince joined them a while later, as did that new dancer who makes me thank God I was born a man. That woman is just beautiful. Damn...Anyways...I don't remember the exact setlist. But, I can offer some minor details. Prince tore the shit out of his guitar on the first few numbers, including Vavoom. Wow. You could hear the jaws cracking on the floor. Then, a couple of male dancers came up on stage and started doing their routine, at which point Prince asked for some ladies to come up on stage. In about ten seconds the entire stage was full of women just dancing their asses off. The two male dancers were getting all sleazy and shit on some of the women, and it was funny as hell watching their sappy boyfriends in the audience get all fussy. After Prince & crew jammmed for what seemed like an eternity or two on Y Would I Do That When I Could Do This, he asked the women to take a break so Rhonda could get set up. Rhonda got up and played The One on her fretless bass. Wow. It was smooth...After that, Prince hooked her up with a six-string bass and the rest of the night is kind of a blur. They kicked our asses! Some of the songs they played in this jam meddly were: Freaks on This Side, Sex Machine, Fight the Power, and a bunch of other shit I forgot. It was a great ngith indeed, and well worth $7. Prince was in an incredibly terrific mood, and was interacting with the crowd quite extensively. He had people up front telling the band when to stop, step on his guitar peddle for him when he was up at the piano, and was making some nappy faces and joking around with people when soloing. It was really cool, to say the least.
The party ended at a little past 5:30, and the crowd walked into the Paisley parking lot like a bunch of zombies. The sun was out, and now I am sitting at my computer screen answering calls after only one hour of sleep. It was worth it though. Thank you Prince....
Someone else can fill in the setlist details a little better perhaps... |
