This may have been mentioned, but I'm too lazy to check. I'm sure someone will point it out if it has been. Prince is mentioned a good deal in the book BECK: BEAUTIFUL MONSTROSITY, by Julian Palacios. In reference to his album "Midnight Vultures":
Though this album has been plagued with facile comparisons to Prince, on "Get Real Plaid," the nod to Wendy & Lisa's brilliant work on albums like Prince & the Revolutions 1999 is apparent. Prince himself spoke warmly of the coldness of some of the songs of albums of that period. "I've always liked Prince," Beck told Select in late 1999. I remember all his early videos & everything. I love "Raspberry Beret," "Darling Nikki" & "Kiss." I remember when he used to perform in a trenchcoat & g-string. I liked that, cuz when I was a kid, I was really into trenchcoats." People forget how subversive Prince was when he started out. In 1981 the diminutive pop genius could be seen on late night cable television, descending a stage ramp wearing thigh-high purple boots, naked but for briefs with metal studs, with huge flash pots going off and two white chicks licking his chest, all the while singing about fucking a bride on her way to the church to be married. "Prince kicks ass & he's completely fey at the same time," Beck observed. "There's something about that mixture, that cocktail, that I can relate to."
