Prince offers to Buy One of Melbournes Biggest Nite Clubs

Word on the street is that Prince, the purple one himself has offered to buy one of Melbournes biggest Nite Clubs.

Metro Nite Club on Bourke Street - Melbourne was offered a sum of $8million Australian Dollars, but knocked back the offer due to the parterns not agreeing on the sum.

Although the offer was apparently made in haste, 'The Artist' has obviously been insulted at the repreval of the offer and vowed never to return to Melboure again.

This would explain a absence from Melbourne.

After his Diamonds and Pearls tour in 1992 which was a complete success, his popularity in the city continuted to rise. His hits have been heard all over, and a source has said that one of his early hits 'controversy' was heard on radio station, Nova which is a youth radio station. This track was heard at peak time radio around 8pm on a Sunday Night.

"Word on the street"

LMAO!

Where do people get these stories?

It's hard enough to get Prince to TOUR Australia, let alone buy a night club here.

one word - BOGUS!

This one goes right up there with Prince visiting Australia during the Sydney olympic games.

He didn't even pay his new home in Canada outright, so why would he pay 8 million for a night club on the other side of the world from where he lives, in a country he's only toured once, more than 12 years ago?

Absolute BS!

This story is fair dinkum. Prince visited the Metro on his visit, and was apparently keen on setting up a Glam Slam in Melbourne. This rumour has been going around for years. My source was Prince's Melbourne proxy, and a complete tosser he was at that, and full of shit.

Other Prince rumours in Melbourne
- he went motorcycling around The Dandenongs
- he wanted to play part of his concert from the roof of the tennis centre
- he hired out Platinum Studios for his entire stay -- this one is actually true!

These stories aren't so surprising considering he's only ever graced our city once.

That's right! He spent a long time in Australia making a movie called 'The Dawn', in South Australia if I remember.
Do we have any more on this rumour?

Ok i'll add my $.02 worth!!!

Did you know that a few songs from the dumped 'I'll Do Anything' movie soundtrack that Prince was going to do were recorded at EMI's Studio 101 in Sydney. This is noted in 'Turn It Up'.

Also, during his stay at the 5 star Quay West suites in Sydney he filmed part of the '3 Chains'o'Gold' video in the hotel's swimming pool!!! Thats right...the part where the naked girls run into the pool and swim around is at this hotel's 'roman baths' pool!!! I remember an article in the local paper calling Prince a screwball because he wanted all his window's blacked out that overlooked Sydney Harbour - really he was getting this done to complete the filming of these scenes. Gotta love the press.

Does it mention any recordings made in Melbourne, at Platinum Studio?

I'd like to think he recorded there, because that's where Frente recorded their first stuff, and they went on to record their first album at Paisley Park.

I have stayed at the Quay West many times. The pool level is awesome, it is on about the 26th floor. The water laps right up to the windows so you can see the whole city while you are swimming. Noice...

As you come out of the lift, there is a window underwater as well so you can see people swimming inside. Very noice. I went see P in Sydney in 92 5 out of 7 shows including front row middle. It was an awesome week. I was working for Warner Music at the time and I managed to get an autographed framed pic with sigs from Diamond and Pearl and Prince. I also got his guitar pick after he just played Gett Off with it...

He will tour Oz again, but not until he has another hit down there to revive things a bit. There is a big fan base down there, but I have no doubt he would sell out some large venues again if he toured, but touring Oz ain't cheap and every promoter and artist has to watch the bottom line...

Anyway, interesting huh? By the way he stayed at Quay West, the rest of the band stayed at the Intercontinental. I know cause I was in the foyer chatting to Mike B and Rosie... Yes I was a stalker... LOL

Yes, After the '92 tour of Australia, he did come back and was in Adelaide. I think he also attended some sort of play in Sydney at that same time. From what I could make out, it was a small holiday trip, and not business (although I never heard of him making a movie called The Dawn in SA).

Yes, the pool scene was Quay West. The mosaics around the pool give it that sort of Egyptian vibe, so it's no wonder they filmed that there and blocked out the windows.

That's that shot used in the o(+> promo of ..."and God created Woman" where the girl is swimming underwater.

Alot of Australian media reported at the time that the SEXY MF video was filmed in a Sydney carpark, but that's false. It was shot just before he left the States for the D + P tour (as if he'd fly his yellow BMW out to Australia to be used in an underground carpark!)

But im still laughing at the original post of how he's going to buy a Melbourne club smile

Being born and bred and currently living in Melbourne, i must say that im amused at the 'controversy' He has caused... there has been so many rumors that he is coming, that he is buying this and that... what a crock of shit...

where else in the world is there a glam slam at the moment... ???

the guy has only visited melbourne once and that was 11 years ago... do people really believe this crap...

Nova is not a radio station for youth... its very diverse and has high ratings for all age groups... i hear prince on a lot of melbourne stations all the time... so we hear prince on the radio once and all of a sudden he is buying a niteclub... Metro isnt even all that... its just big... its an awful venue with a bad rep.

Just my twocents

I can tell you all that I was close to the party looking for possible Glam Slam sites on the 1992 tour. In Melbourne it was Metro. But that was 11 years ago, boy is the original post late!!! In Sydney we looked at empty sites and top of the list was Pier One but problems arose because of the owners being in receivership. The other option was in Murray street(I think that's the name) Darling Harbour. In 1993 the only option was a site in Broadway which was dis-used and derelict. It was on 2 levels and negotiations were under way with the landlords as well as elaborate plans for the nightclub, when the name change came. Of course the Glam Slams were then closed and negotiations stopped. Quite a few years later it opened as the GAS nightclub.

Boy i could keep posting here for days!!!

It's like all i have at the moment Prince-related are my memories from that glorious week he was in Sydney!

Damn!!! I'm getting all giddy just thinking about it!

Who remembers in Sydney the Daily Telegraph printing an exlcusive pic of Prince front page in colour at the height of the Prince-fever that hit Oz?? The story was the two female reporters hustled in on Prince at a private party and snapped him right up close - then they did a swift camera swap so that the bodyguards took the wrong camera - and voila - front page pic!

C'mon - more stories dammit!!!

Can anyone confirm the rumours of Prince taking a girl to Bondi Beach while in Sydney in his limo - telling his driver to go for a walk and then ppl seeing his limo going up and down wildy!!!

I heard that his limo was going up & down the Kings Cross strip (which probably ended up at Bondi)
