Quick Story:

I was picking up some strings for my guitar at the local Guitar Center (Concord CA) & at the time my band was short a drummer. I was doing my thing when I heard the most killer drumming ever, it was coming from the drum room, I was impressed but kept shopping. But, after about 4 seconds of silence this drummer scorched a version of 777-9311...I thought "thats it!, i gotta meet this drummer..." Walked in the room & low & behold was goddamn John Blackwell. I introduced myself during a short break, I told him "I came in to offer you a job, & see if you would like to play some more Prince covers, but..."

(he interrupted) "yeah...but i don't to play COVERS".

Cool guy. I learned infinite things by watching him for the 20 minutes I was there.

I've seen John at the NAMM a few times and many many other drummers, nothing like watching and absorbing what you can of their skills and tricks!

Oh...about 10 months to a year ago...I remember my mom had already went to the Oakland One Nite Alone show, it was about year ago...I was really astonished how all these young guys in there were totally intimidated by him, but they were like "oh, but he plays with Prince..." I'm a younger musician but these kids really didn't respect Prince...I guess they don't the legacy.
