Behind-the-scenes Celebration report -- Brownmark to join the NPG? Hi...I'm a member of Dayz of Wild...and I'd like to file a report on Prince: A Celebration...
Prince sent vans to pick up the band at the airport. We grabbed a quick bite, and headed over to Paisley. The place is gorgeous, and the tour was extremely informative. We met Manuella (Prince's personal assistant), Takumi (his guitar tech), and Eric (another member of the stage crew). After chatting with Dr. Fink, we began a lengthy soundcheck during which Morris Hayes came in to chat for a bit. We also snuck a peek at the setlist for the Tuesday night show, (which as many of you will know by the time you're reading this included most of the Rave tracks, Adore, Question of U, Uptown, and the surprise opener, Anna Stesia). After soundcheck, we were all starved, so we attempted to look for the easiest way out of the building. The placed had been closed for 2 hours to get ready for the party at 9, so we weren't sure which exit to use. As we turned from the front exit, out of Studio A walks Prince! He had on a blue loose fitted shirt, black pants, and of course he looked great. We said hello. "Hey, how ya'll doin'?" was the response. He went into the kitchen with someone, and quietly waited for us to leave before he went about his business. After eating, we returned to the Paisley dressing rooms upstairs to get ready. We spent a while on the stairs once the party started watching the videos, and checking out the DJ. At 11:30, we took the stage. It was a blast. What an honor it was to play right there in his joint! The crowd was lovely to us. Later, we found out the Prince called Takumi several times during our set, and Takumi urged him to come down to check us out. With 45 minutes left, I could see him strolling up to the DJ booth in back. He just stood and watched the last few minutes of our show, then disappeared. He reappeared later behind the soundboard, showed the video from 93, and played some unreleased tracks. When he hopped up onto his private seating area above the stage, we approached Aaron, his bodyguard, and let him know we interested in playing again thinking Prince might come up and jam with us. Aaron said, "Prince has to approach me with that....I can't approach him." RATS!!!! Oh well. That's my report. Oh yeah...one thing I forgot to mention. Info from Mr Hayes: Larry Graham has lost interest in touring with NPG (he's still with the organization, and is currently working on a new album with Prince). Get this: Prince has asked BROWN MARK to replace Larry on bass. Not sure but I think he accepted! Well that's it! Thanks for listening.... Visit our website at: http://members.tripod.com/~LuvAll/ | |
