Report on the third party -- TKO and the Fonky Baldheads perform Okay. I keep going to these parties expecting something to HAPPEN! I mean, I'm not talking about a 4 hour "Prince at the Piano Jam Session culminating with a beautiful version of 'The Grand Progression'" or anything. But SOMETHING! Tonight we were "treated" to TKO (an excellent local band) and our "first taste" of Kirk Johnson's (he'll always be Kirky J to me) The Fonky Baldheads. At you gotta hand it to'em. They ARE fonky. And, hey, they're bald. And if this band doesn't take away r & b singer Pink's crown for least creative music industry gimmick, I don't know who
will. They even paid homage to "his majesty", Prince, by a doing a coked-out version of "Head". Um....Whoohaa. And one other tribute to Jehovah, himself. Okay, it was a tribute to Larry Graham. But I'm sure SOMEBODY looks at him like a God. It was a slow version of "Thank You (falettin me...blahblahblah). And, to be honest, I don't think I've heard this song ENOUGH at Paisley Park these past couple years. . I believe it was during this tune the FBH brought out a little kid ("fonkybaldhead' next generation" er sumthin) to look cute, bob his head and blow some little horn thingy that sounded like it only played two notes. If cute factor was what they were going for, it paid off. Afterwards, we got to see some footage. This time with sound! Weeeee! First off we saw Rosie Gains do her lone hit (Closer Than Close (housemix) on TOTP. And what in the HELL was she doing at the end? Just SCREAMING and BELLOWING at the TOP of her LUNGS like a wild banshee (sp?). Twas weird. And then it was Prince doing "Baby Knows" and "Pretty Man". That was cool to see since I've never seen them. We also saw more footage from the Lovesexy show. If nothing else proving what a ridiculously amazing live performer he was. Just smilin away that big toofy grin whenever the spirit moved him. And it seemed to move him quite frequently back then. We also saw the "Hot Wit U (nastygirlblahblahblah) video in it's entirety. I thought it was a step above "Come On" and a step below "BBGW" in quality. Cute women shakin their T & A like the big hand just struck 14 on their 15 minutes of fame clock and Prince in braids looking like he hasn't aged since '88. There was also a promo video played for the celebration. Hmm. And that's it. No Prince. I know he never said he would play until Tuesday but DAMN!!! And aside from that many of us had to deal with some additional crapola at Paisley. If I wasn't so damn good natured, I might even refer to it as COMPLETE AND TOTAL BULLSHIT. Because not only there no re entry into Paisley after you leave but if you leave the "Love4oneanother" room (this is where the stage is set up and all the action is...also where Prince hangs out) you are banished from it for the rest of the night. Apparently they sold too many tix er sumthin and many of us were relocated to the soundstage area where some of the memorabila is set up. Yeah, there's a video screen in there and we could hear the music but there's only so many times you can look at Prince's instruments, cars and outfits...cool as they may be. It just feels, from my perspective, that us VIP's become less important and the Paisley staff grow more agitated and bitchy by the day. Especially that dark haired girl who frisks you as you walk in. y'know...the one with the small jewel in her face that looks like she just got done eating a sugar-raised donut and forgot to wipe her chin? Is she power trippin or WHAT? So I leave. And ironically I get in the car and turn on the radio, and Whitney's "You Give Good Love" is on the radio, while I'm feeling like a shat-on gimp. Well not that bad. But still. Peace and forgive my longwindedness. |
