ONA Live Review on TheLouisvilleScene.com

Text:

"Prince Rogers Nelson can be one odd man. He fights with his record companies, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, and he lives in the frozen tundra of northern Minnesota. One thing, however, remains a constant: The man can churn out some powerful music.

"One Nite Alone . . . Live!" is the first concert release in Prince's career. Recorded over multiple nights, "One Nite Alone" covers many musical styles and desires. Much of the music is wrapped in slow grooves and sexy rhythms. Fans may notice the absence of many of Prince's bigger hits, but that shouldn't deter anyone from this stellar collection.

Perhaps the most notable facet of this CD is how the band plays like a well-oiled-machine. The cohesiveness they exhibit is outstanding. "Strange Relationship" is an '80s-style, bass-laden funk jam that rolls effortlessly into a spirited "When U Were Mine." When Prince says, "I dare you to sit down on this one," you'll find doing just that difficult. Instantly, "When U Were Mine" moves into the sultry "Avalanche." Disc two's triple threat is with "Adore," "I Wanna B Ur Lover" and "Do Me, Baby," which serve as a reminder that Prince is as sexy as he is talented.

"One Nite Alone" includes a bonus disc titled "The Aftershow: It Ain't Over." In many cities, Prince & Co. carried on their party to a small club in town. Joining Prince in these loose jam sessions were George Clinton, Musiq and Larry Graham.

Thirty-six songs provide more than three hours of music and one grand listening experience. The "hits" aren't missed."

Prince lives in southern Minnesota and the tundra here is only frozen 4 or 5 months a year. wink
