amazon.com article on the name change

THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE ARTIST IS NOW PRINCE (AGAIN)

[The following was in a promotional email sent to me by Amazon.com:]

Last week, Prince—recently calling himself “The Artist
Formerly Known As Prince” (and sometimes just “The
Artist”)--announced that he will return to using the name
Prince. The singer said he was switching back because his
publishing contract with record label Warner Bros., which
was signed using the name Prince, expired on Dec. 31,
1999. “I will now go back to using my name instead of the
symbol I adopted as a means to free myself from all
undesirable relationships,” he said. Prince adopted the
symbol on his 35th birthday in 1993, after years of
wrangling with Warner Bros. over creative-control issues
(including a televised performance at which Prince appeared
with the word “slave” painted on his cheek). As we
collectively shrug our shoulders at this latest news, we
invite you to look at the week’s hottest auctions of items
related to Prince, or The Artist Formerly Known as The Artist:
