Vegas show reports Editor's note: We received in quick succession, two reports from the Vegas gig. I consolidated them into one news item.
From FACE, cllamont@hotmail.com: Just got back in LA from the Vegas gig last night. You probably already have a hundred reports but here's mine. Larry Graham's set was the best I have seen him do yet. Prince popped out for "Free" amd another tune on guitar. He even was sporting the police cap with the chains hanging over his face! Larry was well recieved by the noticeably less than sell-out crowd. The hall was probably about 75-80% full. While setting up for the NPG, an announcement came over the PA saying that there was to be a party in Studio 54 on Sunday night. Everyone seemed a little perplexed and there was no collective squeal of excitement. Those of us in the $125 seats felt we should at least get a break on the club gig. No one knew if tickets were going to be sold or if it would a cover at the door. After the show, I asked the MGM ticket counter and they said $110 and $165 for VIP! I said yikes and passed. Prince kicked off his set with "Sign o the Times" and it really sounded fresh. Prince made a point of playing lots of guitar last night and it was a real treat. Mike Scott was gone as was Marva King. There was some new chick on percussion that made me long for Sheila E. After that the set was pretty much the same that he played last year. I did notice the lack of ballads - the only one played was "Nothing Compares 2 U". Having seen Rosie Gaines do it with Prince back in January, I was actually missing her but it was great. My personal highlight his interpolation of the Gershwin classic, "Summertime", in the solo on the end of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man". Those Miles Davis/jazz in the crowd (I think I was the only one) really appreciated this. This is why I go see Prince every chance I get - his genius will give you something new and fascinating at every live performance. Staying with the guitar work, he played guitar on "Kiss" (which was extra funky) and "Talking Loud and Saying Nothin" which he usually dances around on and lets the back up guitar player handle. One shirtless freak in the front row managed to get on stage and did some crazy looking break dance moves. It took a long time for the security to get there. Prince was on top of is piano signing. Prince said, "oh oh, the drugs just kicked in!". Security gaffled him and Prince asked them to not hurt him. He also mentioned that he was taking a break from recording and said something about rerecording Sign of the Times - whch is an excellent idea because that masterpeice was underrated when it was released. "Come On" was the funky encore with the giant blow up legs from the back cover of the NPS album hanging over the stage. Prince did not even preach that much which made it even more fun. From SunsetMind, lmwp@concentric.net: Probably due to short notice the arena was only 3/4 full but the show was excellent as the Artist was in a Great mood smiling widely and haveing fun. He even wore the My name is prince Hat with the chain's in the front. really cool! Some of the song's played were:[pre:0deadbeef0] Sign of the times I could never take the place of your man U got the look Let's go Crazy Purple Rain Kiss Take me with U Nothing compares 2 U Baby i'm a star Gett off + Lot's more[/pre:0deadbeef0] during the show he spoke about owning his master's and re recording his past albums he also spoke about Christ He closed with the song "Come on" He also mention that he would play Studio 54 tomorrow night The Weather was great maybe that made him feel so good? | |
