Prince mentions in Q (UK) [Several mentions in this month's Q Magazine (UK)]
[Page 152, "Down The Front: Who rocks and who flops at a venue near you"] This small feature is a sliding scale-chart of who's doing well live - "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" is just above the middle, indicating a positive opinion of this event: "...to release DVD of New Year's Eve concert, including last ever performance of 1999." [Page 41, "Jon Bon Jovi's Record Collection] "Prince: Purple Rain - 'This was more like a book or a movie - it had a beginning, a middle and an end. There's every emotion from the ballads to the rocker; all the influences were evident, from Hendrix to Chic. He put it into a film, and made something more of it - I enjoyed that immensely at the time, even though I only saw it in foreign countries with subtitles. Sign O' The Times was great too. I didn't buy the last record, though. A professional loony? It's not focused any more, is it? It's the same with guys like John Mellencamp. It feels to me like he just records the first 11 songs he writes.'" [Page 118, "Compilations Review"] A (new?) "Tribute to Prince" is reviewed. I think it's the same as 'Party O' The Times' but has a different cover. "From Heaven 17's bollockless version of Sign O' The Times to an aptly robotic U Got The Look from Gary Numan, this is a strange compilation. Half '80s electropop daddies (Numan, Dead Or Alive) and half eclectic black acts (Ice-T, Adeva and Loleatta Holloway) confirms the wide appeal of the artist formerly given a shit about by people. But nothing here - not even Mellow Man Ace's chunky Irresistable Bitch - is better than the dullest dodo on Prince's Greatest Hits. (**)" _____ "The artist formerly given a shit about by people"? So why's prince.org here?! Argh | |
