Boy George comments on Prince in liner notes of latest CD

A new 4 CD Culture Club Retrospective Box Set was released last week by Virgin Records. In the liner notes, Boy George makes the following comment about Prince.

"Look, for example at someone such as John Lennon-socially he was known for being a bully, putting people down, and he wrote 'Imagine.' Or Prince (the artist formerly known as Get A Personality) who has written some of my most favorite songs and yet can't hold a conversation? If you ask me, it's simply intimidation through silence but I don't buy into that shy pop star bullshit. Shy is for librarians."

Maybe Prince just didn't wanna talk to your skanky ass, Boy George.

Being a huge fan, it pains me to admit that B.G. has a point. Whether it is a marketing strategy on Prince's part, or simply a kind of social anxiety disorder - he's been riding the "difficult genius" train for a long time, and it would be great to see the personal and spiritual development he has gone through bear some visible fruit. After all, isn't that what developing your spirituality is all about?

i am so perturbed with ppl always talking about P not wanting to carry on a conversation. P is a very private person (just like myself) and i can truely relate to that.i am a well educated person and i don't like to converse with ppl.as 4 boy george, GET A FREAKIN LIFE!

I'm not sure what Boy George has against Prince. It seems slightly odd.On an interview on a chat show about 2 years ago he described Prince as "a dwarf who looked like he had been dropped in a vat of pubic hair". Perhaps Prince turned him down!!!

Boy George has a reputation for attacking lots of famous people. This is nothing new. He's gone after George Michael and Gavin Rossdale in the past.

He has something of a point though. Prince does display passive aggressive characteristics.

it's funny Prince is Considered a Has-Been by some but damn Boy George when was the Last time He was Happening??now I dig Old Culture Club stuff&a few of His Solo jams but Man it's been like How Long for Dude since He last was even mattering?? Yeah Prince Trips&plays Head Games like any other Pop Artist but the difference was that Prince didn't have to have a Gimmick to Run Past His Commerical Prime like Boy George.I bet Prince ain't forgot the Comment Boy George Made about Him looking like a Dwarf that Fell into Public Hair either?I Dig Culture CLub for back in the day&whatnot but ain't nobody thought about His Ass for the Longest time.

Vanessah! Another librarian on the org! I'm another not at all shy librarian.

I think the "dwarf dipped in a vat of pubic hair" is an OLD quote of George's. I seem to remember seeing that in a book many many years ago - much more than two. Perhaps he was repeating himself on the chat show? I do think George has a point, though. Prince maintains his silence and "privacy", but expects everyone to defer to him whenever he does decide to walk amongst us. His "silence" is more of a power and attitude thing than a product of being "shy".

This is only his account of what happened between them. It does sound like his usual 'I'll-sum-them-up-in-the-bitchiest-way-possible-so-as-to-get-as-many-laughs-as-possible' normal type affair. He said that a cockroach don't move in Madonnas home without her approval. He is obviously picking up on something that rings true, I just don't think it's quite as dramatic as his drama queen ass is making it out to be.

I'll learn to spell one day...

irrestiblebitch - prince has been a lot more open and conversationalist on the ona tour and the celebrations - I think probably the last time bg spoke to prince was like 1985 at the brits or something.

At least he is acknowledging Prince as a songwriter.

Can we find a pop star more irrelevant than Boy George?!?! Face it, Culture Club was a product of many better bands that came before them (Yaz and Style Council to name two) and influenced no one...well maybe Milli Vanilli.

in the 1990 pet shop boys book "literally" neil tennant also discusses prince. the paragraph reads as follows, "neil tells of the night he met prince in london at a private party after one of his 'lovesexy' concerts. considerably worse for wear, neil resolved that prince, he of world-famous reserve and master of the one-word answer, was not going to get away with the silent mysterious routine tonight. in the end they chatted about religion and pop music, prince's show and 'it's a sin'."
my point is that other folks in the entertainment industry have come in contact with prince, and had similar experiences. it's important to remember that at the time boy george most likely came into cantact with him, it was probably during the 80's when both were more in the public eye. prince was definetly more shy and quiet then. even his close associates confirm this nature. he has since come out of his shell, and is far more personable now. some people just don't click. it's not a gay/straight issue... psb are an openly gay group and 'it's a sin' is a popular gay anthem. i'm betting it just came down to personality. neil tennant is more intellectual, thoughtful and well mannered; whereas boy tends to be flamboyant. prince obviously felt more at ease chatting with someone he could relate to.

Boy George has been DJing, mixing, and recording for a long time now. He's done fantastic singles with Faithless, put out several kickass mix CDs, and I hear is very good spinning live. His voice sounds better than ever.

So show of hands, how many of you who jumped the gun and called him a has-been (just because he made a snide comment about Prince) have really been following his career?

And how does that compare to people who haven't followed Prince's career since he went into obscurity? Is it just as cool for these people to call him a has-been in the same manner?

Boy George flat out explains that he really digs prince, even enough to mention him in the liner notes. It's no big suprise P has a wierd personality and problems talking with people. He pointed it out jokingly, big deal.

Back in the 80's I was a Culture Club Fan and I used to stay up late and watch Friday nite Videos. Probably some of you are old enough to remember that show, well I would always wait until they played a CC video and than I would go to bed. and than one nite they playedthe When Doves Cry Video and than I became a Prince fan, so actually I guess Iam glad I liked BG. He always had a good voice.

But one of the things that ruined his career was he was always opening his mouth and saying things he shouldn't have.At least he gave prince some credit.

Prince was known to be rude or maybe it was shyness and being reserved, back in the early 80's.
