Q Magazine UK gives One Nite Alone.... Live 3 out of 5

Once again, Q prove themselves to be more interested in wannabes than actually ares.

In the latest issue of Q, they give 2 column inches to the review of One Nite Alone...Live. Not exactly in depth.

Saying that the new songs are "esoteric (read:boring)". The review seems to suggest from the wording that the whole live set is Prince alone on a piano. No mention of quality musician-ship, extended funkiness or even the often strange wander-into-the-audience moments. (Strange - because if you don't know that's where he is, who is he talking to!)

The only worthy comment is about Joy In Repetition "confirming he's the finest guitarist of his era."

They rate the One Nite Alone Piano & Voice CD as the highlight with, Here on Earth, being the stand-out track of the package.

Feel free to comment...

NOT TRUE!!! In Fact, Q was always very supportive.

Of 5 possible Stars, the albums got (sorry, not in the right order):
Purple Rain-5
Sign O The Times-5
The Rainbow Children-4
Symbol-4
Batman-4
Crystal ball-4
Diamonds&Pearls-4
Emancipation-4
Graffiti Bridge-4
Rave un2 the joy fantastic-3
Come-3
Chaos&Disorder-3
New Power Soul-3

That´s rather fair, ain´t it? The reviews are alwys well written and as a Prince-Fan, I was always happy with Q´s way of treating him.
See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

How do you not realize who he is talking to. It's a live set, he's obviously talking to the audience.

This is a fair review. The live set isn't that good and Nightcrawler proves everyone wrong who claims that these magazines are against Prince.

I still think it was unfair to send the magazines and newspapers the club version with One Nite Alone because anyone who buys the set based on the review is going to feel cheated.

I think&Feel they have been very fair to Prince over the Years.I think there Magazine though has goen down&they are doing more Appeal in other elements these days, but when it comes to Major Artists of the Past,etc.. they are usually on Point with what they are saying IMHO.

Q mag has been very supportive of Prince.I have nearly all the 200 Q mags and the reviews are good-even for his weaker albums.I do admit that the One Night Alone review isn't so good, but it's the only one!!
The hits 1,2 and b-sides collectively and seperatly got 5 stars and i quote-
"most greatest hits packages contain a star from the asterological musical map. This set contains an entire galaxy".

Please explain how this was a fair review? There is nothing wrong with the live set. I even think the Raibow Children material holds up well. Prince is in rare form and has a really tight band on this recording. I think as a whole real music and musicianship are in such short supply that people do not reconize good music when they hear it anymore.

you all 4get that he was much younger then.
now he's older .and this show fitts nice at his age now .smooth jazzy relaxed .but still kicking ass.
maybe not 5 stars .but it deserves 4 stars no mather what .

Well, we will not argue about how many stars ONA deserves. I think many people here on the board would not have given some of Prince´s records as many stars as Q has. And it´s simply not true that Q has treated him unfair in recent years. Here´s the review for Rainbow Children, from march 2002 (4 stars):

Prince Rainbow Children

Reviewed: March 2002
Genre: Rock
Label: REDLINE
Release Date: 2001-11-20 00:00:00
Key Tracks: Last December Muse 2 The Pharaoh She Loves Me 4 Me

Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince: once pop music's holy trinity and now, though admittedly stinking rich, a regular source of unintentional hilarity.Jackson's a zombie, Madonna's so desperate to become landed gentry she may well have swallowed the entire works of Jane Austen, and Prince, well, he's still loopy, isn't he? Otherwise he wouldn't be making space-jazz concept albums like this one.²p³It's excellent, though - his most consistent work since 1991's Diamonds And Pearls although you'll need to ignore the peculiar narrative episodes inorder to fully enjoy it. Intrinsic to the "concept", they're a mind-bogglingspiritual free-for-all, skimming from the Old Testament, Egyptology and thecover of Miles Davis's Bitches Brew in order to make unspecified pointsabout race and religion.²p³What's underneath leans on bracing funk (1'1'1 Is 3), jazz flourishes (Muse 2 The The Pharaoh) and, in the case of supercharged gospel epic Last December, sees Prince locate an entirely new gear. Drums and brass aside, almost everything's played by by the man himself and it's been ages since he's worn his talents so lightly rather than simply wallow in them. Sci-fi nonsense apart, he's found some form.

It´s a fair review!

So because YOU like it that means EVERYONE has to like it.

Obviously you do not understand what an opinion/review is. The only way this wouldn't be a fair review is if the reviewer obviously had an agenda against Prince or gave false information and neither of those things happened. The reviewer just didn't find the set to be very exciting and I tend to agree with him. I have boots from the same tour that I like 10 times better then ONA Live because ONAL is not really a concert it's just clips from various shows. So basically I also would only give the set 3 out of 5 stars, but that doesn't mean that your opinion is any less valid.

On a whole I have found that Prince fans take it very personally when every reviewer doesn't love his work. They either say that the media outlet is against Prince because of Time Warner or that they don't understand REAL music. It's all so very funny to me.

I do not think the review is fair. That is my opinion!!!
I do not give a rat's ass if you do not agree with what I have to say.
I am happy with the live set and please do not compare the ONA set with some bootleg recording. Most people are not going to have access to bootleg recordings. Most people cannot compare the bootleg to the official recordings.
As a live document to Prince's ablities as a live performer
I think the set is great. It is not the same as being at the show but, it is good.

" They either say that the media outlet is against Prince because of Time Warner or that they don't understand REAL music. It's all so very funny to me."

Well if you knew anything about the music industry you would understand that rebels are not appreciated.
Prince is not going to win a popularity poll with any of the big five record labels and this has had a effect on his career.

As far as the quality of music is concerned it has gone down hill over the last 10 years or so. The quality began to go down when the big conglomerants began to buy up the smaller record labels. The quality of radio programming has gone down hill due to deregulation that has allowed a company like Clear channel to thousands of station. I will not even go into the payola nonsense.

You can laugh and giggle all you want to dude!!! A lot of things that you are laughing about are true but,you keep living in your fantasy world.

Prince treated his fans that are not in the NPGMC like a bunch of second class citizens, so screw him, he crashed and burned a long time ago, in the huge majority of people not in his little Sing Song Club. The last two tours he has ignored Scotland completely ( which he sold stadiums out everytime) So, who cares? He's begining to be a bit of a self indulgent prick.
