I'd like to see this translated too. Dutch, English, German, no problem, but with French, I'm drawing the line!

I have put the JAZZ MAGAZINE article in the altavista.com/babelfish translation engine and this is what it came up with:

Wednesday January 1, 2003, 0. 01: the merry community of the Net surfers-fans of Prince is in agitation. An e-mail has been just sent to each Member of the NPG Music Club , containing a bond towards a banner page which invites it to download nine instrumental news! "Xpectation" , subtitled "new directions in music from Prince" - formerly, "Bitches Brew" (Columbia, 1969) was surtitré "directions in music by Miles Davis" ... - is thus the second cyberdisque one (after "The Rainbow Children", downloadable in November 2001, a few weeks before its commercial publication) that Prince delivers of exclusiveness to Members in his club. Will we find it finally in the vats of your favorite record dealers? No one still knows it... (And perhaps not Prince himself!)

In 1987, under the pseudonym of Madhouse (which did not mislead obviously anybody but who, despite everything, left somewhat perplexed side "which played of what"...), Prince had published blow on blow and almost without promotion two discs of instrumental "jazz but not that" recorded in duet with the saxophonist Eric Leeds (cf Jazzmag n° 526 ) : it is thus not the first time that it delivers to us the fruit of its musical experiments without words in an "oblique" way - fifteen years ago in a truth-false anonymity, today via the Internet and only for the members (paying) of its club * - who, let us not doubt it, will make heat engraver-yielded for the buddies and, of the blow, to reinvent, thanks to productive generosities of Prince, the free music ... (Of the true-false small pockets of "Xpectation "circulate already on the fabric!)

Passed the first listening (always misleading), the feeling which dominates is that Prince, without being caught for - nor even less to live itself like - an jazzman, all the same recorded nine instrumental which must much with the jazz - with its manner, with his sonorities: with its spirit. "Xpectation" is thus not completely a "disc of jazz" - that one could compare, for example, in new Steve Coleman [ ndr - which, be-known as while passing, since it was him also in town on 28 October last at the time of the two Parisian concerts of Prince, had let us know that if it had had the possibility of jammer with Prince in Bataclan, it would not have asked his remainder... Unfortunately, the only member of the NPG to really knowing Steve Coleman was Eric Leeds, who, this evening, was not part... ] , with the last Wayne Shorter or next Herbie Hancock "acoustic" - but it is precisely what makes its particular charm. "Xpectation", in addition, is a disc a little out-time, not "mode" for a penny - not of sonorities "magnets", naive kicks drum' bass or winks technoïdes: Prince is more malignant than that...

From one end to another of new instrumental, no instrumentalist draws the cover with him: the saxophonist Candy Dulfer could have added some with too much wanting to compete with Maceo Parker or David Sanborn... It of it is nothing: she exposes the topics by looking after their melody cutting and Prince, as a true head of orchestra, finely canalisé/cadré his interventions. The violonist Vanessa Mae could have launched out to bow lost in improvisations jazzy-bluesy, history not to make regret with Prince having forgotten (or not to know...) Regina Casing... It of it is nothing: she is satisfied (according to her also with the letter the new directions of the owner?) to expose the princely melodies méticuleusement and in particular makes gleam its charming sonority in Xhalation .

Ronda Smith , worked by becoming-jazzwoman piégeux, it could also have sought to make proliferate the walking bass and end up being caught the low registers in the carpet - is not Reggie Washington or Larry Grenadier which wants... It of it is nothing: it accompanies its partners sobrement, being authorized - but being authorized just - that and there some short and discrete appearances solo on four cords - as in the intro of Xosphere . John Blackwell , tambourinor prolix with the technique refined in Berklee School of Boston, would not have had to him not too much effort to make to choke his comrades under a flood of polyrythmes erudite, fills and station-wagons assassins... He of it is nothing: more musician that beater, it gives a flexible and light impulse here ( Xpedition ) or imposes a powerful impulse and groovy ( Xpand ), always choosing, though it arrives, the tempo right and without never surjouer - as in "The Rainbow Children" besides. There is a fifth guide in "Xpectation": Silence . And of what does play Silence? Of itself of course... Homage To Miles? Perhaps. Undoubtedly. [ Small recall: in its "Turnip Un2 The Joy Fantastic" of 1999 (Arista), the fourth piece (four seconds a quiet interlude!) was subtitled Miles - 199? - a manner, for Prince, to mean eternity musician of the one of her musical heroes? ] Lastly, Prince as for him dealt of the guitars and the keyboards, appearing also creative once more on one or the other instrument. The Prince guitarist is more in withdrawal than of habit (even if it "is betrayed", for the best, in Xpedition ...), and sometimes surprising jazzitude, as in Xosphere - for once, one thinks more of Phil Upchurch (with which P. undoubtedly jammé in the Nineties when this one recorded in Paisley Park the matter of its two albums for Go Jazz) or of Larry Carlton - Carlton which accompanied Joni Mitchell (one of the idols of P.) in the Seventies (listen to "Hejira" ) - that with Jimi Hendrix or Carlos Santana... As for the Prince clavierist, it adores the electric piano and the organ: one imagines that Ricky Peterson often had, at one time, to show him "plans" (Ricky P. knows P. since the middle of the Seventies...) and the intensive listening of the discs of Headhunters, Return To Forever and especially of Weather Report never leaves indifferent - in Xpectation , nicely tortured sonorities of the keyboards are more "zawinuliennes" and recall us also those heard recently in impressive instrumental Xenophobia (in "One Nite Alone... Live!").

And if Prince is authorized some mini-chorus, it is especially its science of the accompaniment which ends up alluring: one can measure, there, the way traversed since the Madhouse years. [ we Hear well: Prince is not ready to compete with Herbie Hancock but its science of the agreement right and the harmony chatoyante would point out almost that to us of Donny Hathaway, which is nothing... ]
Being thus pressed on irreproachable executants, "Xpectation" is an excellent "hybrid" disc, oscillating between passions jazz and culture rhythm' blues. The set of themes is sometimes naive (what is certainly not without charm if one wants to leave his purism to the cloakroom well: cf. Xemplify ), of another time "jazz sic" ( Xpectation ) or - only once fortunately - a little mièvre ( Xgenous ). Other topics are on the other hand hookers and originals: subtle and refined Xcogitate and Xosphere (which would not spoil on a good disc of the Stalemate Metheny Group or Robben Ford), the funky Xpand , and adventurous Xpedition . But what allures above all, it is the extreme care taken to the overall sound: Prince thought "group", and "Xpectation" is a collective adventure, where each musician with a precise role to play, and where nobody, as one already said, does not play any more "extremely" but the other - not even the Boss... In does that, this new "instrumental x"périence resemble of nothing, in the form, with that of Madhouse which, as one mentioned above, was" a simple "duet between Prince and Eric Leeds, much less structured - more spontaneous? Prince also thought "timing": "Xpectation", which lasts "only" 41 minutes and a handle of seconds (like 33-turns...), do not suffer any length and forms a perfectly balanced continuation. In fact, "Xpectation" and its sonorities overall "rétros" bring back for us at the time of first Crusaders ("Crusaders 1 ", "The 2nd Crusade", "Chain Reaction"... *** TRANSLATION ENDS HERE ***

The translation is not complete but it covers 95% of the article I hope U had fun reading it !

Regards Mick.

Don't you hate it when someone answers a question by telling you to look somewhere else instead of just giving you the answer? Anyone care to answer the question?

Use the URL you received from NPGMC for Empty Room and replace the letters "emptyroom" with "tokyo", "osaka", "nagoya" and "copenhagen", respectively. There are five sound check files total.

Those translations always have an unintentionally hilarious phrase tucked in them somewhere and this one does not disappoint (in fact it's one of the best yet).

Here's how babelfish translated "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic":

"Turnip Un2 The Joy Fantastic"

Simply priceless! And I bet a lot of folks will argue that it fits, too! smile

Peace, David
