I concur with the comments of Cream319 and the Blue Prince - but let's take it a step further. In regard to Communication and Marketing - the Elite control to a great degree what the public hears. We get our news from filtered sources that determine what we can and cannot hear - just the same as it is determined what can and cannot be played on the radio. The book, "The Power Elite," is an excellent read to identify just how much control a very small group of people have. The monopoly of "Clear Channel" is one example. With that said Prince has to use alternative sources to reach out to the public.
Blue's point about who is popular today - the Britneys (who cannot sing!), Justins, Nellys, etc - it all goes back to marketing - and it all goes back to who owns the monopolies on the communication sources to the public. Their big push is behind predominately young acts who lack "real" talent or depth and are aimed at young audiences who will forget about these so called artists tomorrow when there is a new clone that sings the same types of songs and uses the same choreographer. Everything has to be a big "production." The same is true with many of the movies now. They are primarily aimed at a young demographic and only seek to "entertain" using the lowest denominator. (Include all the "so called" reality TV shows in that category as well). We as people have a great diversity of interest - but you'd almost never know that if you'd see what's selling. But what is selling is what people are led to buy. Most consumers just aren't "consious consumers." I'm not trying to subscribe to a conspiracy theory here - but just am stating the facts - that a very small group of people through their corporate power own many different dimensions of communication sources and contribute to forming public opinion which buys products, elects candidates for political office - etc.

EvilWhiteMale said: Everyone keeps talking about living in the past, but the fact remains that Prince was the fucking man back in the early days, and now he's just not good in most people's opinions. People have the right to not like his new stuff, and they're not assholes for expressing their opinions.
I think Prince has been sucking pretty bad since the early 90's but I still think he's a musical genious. I just think he's showing his age too much with this jazz/funk garbage. The Rolling Stones are antiques, but they are still full of life and can still rock the fuck out. Getting older doesn't mean you have to shift gears to the extreme. No matter how much you try to defend Prince and his direction, you can't deny the fact that he's not selling like he used to and he has in fact lost a huge amount of fans. I will have to agree on this point...but my concern isn't so much about sales figures, he does eventually make his money. I love Prince as the genius that he is, but just cut the dogma crap and KICK MAJOR ASS on cd for a change. I love real jazz and I think TRC was good, but his music has been boring for the most part with some great songs here and there. I took the songs that I like from cds over the past 11 years and made some hot cds. It's not like he can't do it, he doesn't want to do it. Now "He's 44 & a serious jazz musician now", whatever. I never really gave a crap how many songs he could produce in 1/2 hour or who is in his band as long as the end result was something intersting (fast or slow). Thank goodness he is still a great performer. It's pathetic that a lot of these kids don't know who he his or just think of him as this "weirdo in high heals from the 80's." No one is really pumping up his legacy, because he's pissed off so many people and the current crop of young reporters and critics from MTV, VH1, BET, Spin, Rolling Stone (hence that review for ONA), Vibe ect...Only think of him in terms of Purple Rain or the egomaniac who made people refer to him as symbol. And though I will agree with his protest about him having control over his music, At the end of the day, the average kid or 9to5-er could give a crap. Is the cd hot or not...period. He doesn't have to repeat the past or become some super media whore again, just give a fuck about what your fans have been wanting from you, 100% airtight, rockin', thought provoking, innovative Prince, without shoving unwanted dogma or old funk/jazz stars down our throats.

isn't vibe owned by Quincy Jones?? if so.. he HATES prince.. I have seen a few specials on vh1 lately that he produced about "black music" & " I'm black and proud".. they had everyone all detailed out.. even rick james of all people.. well when they got to the 80's .. they made MJ sound like jesus christ.. and ( I thought ok prince should be next) NOPE.. they went to the late 80's righ to Rap.
Quincy hates prince because he wouldn't sing that dumb song 'we are the world'.. and on an award show they had a 10th anv. and Quincy was on stage and prince was up there for something.. and again he handed him that mic to sing that stupid song.. and prince handed Quincy the sucker out of his mouth also every interview I have seen with Quincy he is always mad or gives him a back handed compliment.. He is just pissed he doesn't need him to Produce... and seems to act like Prince NEEDS producers? I am not sure but I think Vibe is or was owned by Quincy? so that doesn't surprise me of the review.

Wow!
Prince seems to have employed several personal representatives to speak for him, or maybe some people only think they are. "You need to come to grip with the fact that Prince has grown up and moved on." -Really? He is older and is playing more jazz, I guess that's all it takes to constitute the maturity of an aged artist. "Prince doesn't care about that kind of thing." -Seems pretty bold of some total stranger coming up and presuming to know the man's feelings and thoughts, other than the blather he spews. "Hey VIBE ~ Prince is not interested in what U know," -*Sigh* Most of the people on Prince.org seem to be really terrific people who have a tremendous appreication for music, and the emotions that accompany it. OKAY, that is how you should speak of someone, rather than FOR someone. Those of you who sound like P's personal representatives, did you get your buddies in trouble in school when you spoke for them too? BUT HOLD ON---A voice of reason, which is of course the object of mindless scrutiny. "You guys are funny. You totally just repeat all the same stuff whe you talk about Prince's growth and journeys and all that crap. And anyone who uses Prince-isms like "fams" and shit are really out of control. Are you so stuck on Prince's dick that you actually use his ridiculous vocabulary?" [b]-AMEN!!![b/] Sorry about the little rant...one of those little pet peeves. By the way, who else is using the killer Ben Franklin quote I'm using...Bravo to you! "All Hail King Bart!"

"Oh Prince is so wonderful, oh he's the greatest artist of all time, oh he can do no wrong." Please, get real. What's really happening here is you are all just pissed cuz Prince ain't worth a hill of crap anymore, and the whole world knows it, except for the fanatics. Still trying to play devil's advocate in an attempt to convince people you have an ounce of intelligence ,huh? "Pam...that's just stupid."

Yes, i have noticed that too. It is very petty of him to still be pouting about that after all this time. Qunicy is not as professional as i thought he was. We can add him to the list of assholes that have some kind of stupid personal hangup when it comes to Prince.

If I have to hear another Take Me With You/Raspberry Beret medley, I'm gonna stab someone with a rusted phillips head screwdriver. It's all the same shit with the exception of the newly added garbage from TRC, which makes me wanna vomit blood. I'd rather get live stuff from the early days, you know, back when he was actually worth a shit.

I agree with you on what you wrote. But: Almost every ONA concert review I read was extremely positive, though Prince was talkin`against media during the shows. I think he is just not willing to cooperate with the media like other “popstars” do. So why should the media run after somebody who might be very complicated to work with, if there are people who are more easy to handle? For the media it is just content what counts. I would like to mention one very simple example: It would have been nice for the media and the readers to see some good photos from the tour in the newspapers. That does not mean that Prince has to allow photographers at the shows. Just make authorised pictures of his choice (f.e. from the reheasals) downloadable in an online-press-lounge. Is even that too much? I think it is much better to feed the media with content you control yourself. But if you don`t do it, the media takes pictures which are available: Pics from the Parade-era (in one german newspaper), or even from lookalikes (as read here on the .org). Does that do Prince any good? Maybe it is not just about monopolies and conspiracy, but it might have something to do with convenience (for the media)…?

I think anyone who gets this pissy over a comment I make about someone they don't even know, has serious issues. I mean, I like Nirvana, but if anyone says they don't like the band or Kurt, I may debate a certain issue, or just say nothing. I wouldn't get all hostile and make myself look like a bitch. I think there's a lot of people here who take Prince way too seriously. You don't even know the guy, so why the fuck do you feel the need to defend him whenever someone has a different opinion? My God, I'm surrounded by sissies. Here's a news flash to all you pussy bitches: Prince doesn't know who you are, he doesn't care who you are, and he couldn't care less if you live or die. Maybe when you arrive at reality's door, you'll wake up and get off the purple cock. There's nothing wrong with liking his music, but until you get to know the man personally, quit acting like you're best friends. He doesn't need your defense and you're not doing him any favors. So you know what, why don't YOU fuck off? "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "
