Prince @ Madiba's SOS concert?

Source: http://www.iol.co.za/inde...3&set_id=9

It could be one of the greatest concerts of all time: more than 20 of the biggest names in music have been invited to perform on Robben Island in February.

This was announced last night at a gala dinner at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, hosted by former president Nelson Mandela to launch the dazzling concert.

Dignitaries and celebrities who attended last night's function included talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

According to one of the sponsors, Diesel clothing, the extraordinary array of musicians who have been invited to perform includes U2, Will Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Janet Jackson, Prince, Barbra Streisand, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, R.E.M, Gloria Estefan, Phil Collins, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Alicia Keys, Moby, Shakira, Nelly Furtado, Usher, Ricky Martin, Celine Dion, Wyclef Jean, Annie Lennox, Cold Play and Mary J Blige.

Live satellite remotes from Sting, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Paul Simon, Craig David, Dave Stewart, Baaba Maal, Johnny Clegg and Angelique Kidjo are also planned.

Other artists still to reply include Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Linkin Park, Fat Boy Slim, Paul Oakenfold and George Michael.

It is understood Bono, lead singer of U2, and Dave Stewart will be writing a song to honour Mandela for his lifelong commitment to creating a more just and peaceful world.

The SOS To The World concert will be held on February 2 to mark the 20th anniversary of Mandela's departure from Robben Island after 20 years in prison.

February 2 is also a historic date as it was on that day in 1990 that then state president FW de Klerk unbanned liberation organisations such as the ANC.

Cape Town's high society, fitted out in their finest, attended last night's function and were addressed by Mandela and Oprah. The entertainment included David Kramer and Pieter-Dirk Uys.

Notice how it says "invited" to perform. They can invite President Bush and the Pope, but it doesn't mean they'll show up. Still, if even a few of those people show, it'd probably be a good concert.

So Prince already replied.

Never no, he may actually have fun.

depends if He wants his "spiritual noise 2 B actually heard by the masses or not"
My thoughts are that he should just go and "FUNK" the crap out of them smile

Actually, if Prince is getting involved with the JWs, eye beleive one of their tenets is that they dont get involved in anything political or anything 2 do with other religions as they beleive in staying completely neutral 2 world affairs, as they beleive that Jehovah God is the only one who is capable of sorting this worlds problems out, not mere human beings!! So, eye really doubt whether Prince is gonna get involved in something like this!!

He never done LIVE AID, (donated a song / video yes, but never rocked up), they said he was gonna do Woodstock '99, and a bunch of other things and that never happened.

Should do it, but it's not his style and i don't see it happening

I would also like 2 see P amongst all those other 'artists',
I'm sure he would b the star that would shine brightest.
However, given the number of performers there, and the
planning and 'control' for such an event, I' sure P won't
submit himself to such a limited schedule ie. when to go on
stage and 4 how long.

Also, note 2 what cause this event is 4, that's what Prince
was, is, and will always b about...TheUpLiftingOfTheHumanSpirit

On second thought...Prince, don't go.
Come to Australia instead.

As far as I know, if he were to come, it would be his first time to South Africa. Having been a South African fan of Prince for thirteen years now, it would be a real kick to see him in Cape Town. Wow, what a show it would be if only half the guests made it.And hi to all the others out there who shared the Oct 5th Apollo show with my friend and I.

In other words, Prince would let his immense ego get in the way of honoring Mr. Mandela, unlike the other musicians who are there for a cause greater than themselves.

interesting plan. A logistic nightmare I would imagine, Robben island being about 25 minutes by boat from Capetown, having no facilities for this kind of thing, no airstrip, no deep harbour.

I remember when president Clinton visited they tried to get a touringcar onto Robben island by helicopter. It fell in the sea on the way over...

Also from an ecological point of view: there's quite some fauna to disturb, very rare pinguins for example.

All in all, not the best of plans. But then again, the Capetonians also thought they could host the Olympic Games, so you can't deny them optimism.

btw Madonna owns a house in Camps Bay, a suburb of Capetown.

Prince performed on the "Rock In Rio II" music festival in january 1991, so he could do this event too.
But it's true that it says he was only "invited" (and maybe he replied no).

It probably won't happen (realistically chances are slim to none!)... but yeah, it would be amazing to see him in Cape Town, wow!

I'd love to be there...

Golly gee, i hope he plays Avalanche or Family Name, because i can't think of any other songs he could equally alienate and insult the audience's collective intelligence with. But i'm sure he'll think of something.
