I saw a special commemorative magazine called "100 Years of Black Achievement", so I picked it up. Inside, in the music section, there's a small blurb on Prince. It reads:

A prodigy who released his first album at 19, Prince's semi-autobiographic album and movie Purple Rain in 1984 won three Grammy Awards and an Oscar for best score. Born Prince Rogers Nelson on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, MN, he briefly retired in 1993 after a dispute with his record label and stopped using the name Prince--instead adopting an unpronounceable glyph. Currently referred to as "The Artist", Prince has spent the better part of the past decade establishing his autonomy as a musician. 'It's so important that we as black people control our music', he says. In 1998 [should be 1994 - MWC], Prince established the New Power Generation label, producing works by Larry Graham and Chaka Khan as well as Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, his 24th album.
