A very rare and exclusive item - the screen-featured "hero" coat worn by Prince in the hit 1984 film "Purple Rain" - and you can see it in action during the rousing rendition of the title song, as well as in other scenes.

A movie and music memorabilia expert here in Los Angeles has valued this unique item at approximately $8000.00, as it's one of only two known to exist. This is the purple 'woolen' and better of the two models; the second version being the purple 'metallic' model (used mainly for second-unit stunt work), which is at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul. A LOA from one of the film's (and resulting tour) wardrobe seamstresses will be included with your purchase for additional assurance, as she personally and frequently worked on this coat.

This coat has been in careful storage since I received it back in the late 1980s. I have never washed or dry-cleaned it, so it will be slightly wrinkled with some natural wear and distress incurred from regular use and handling during film production. There is also some whitish matter of unknown origin on the front-left lower panel of the coat that I think might be some of the Ivory liquid soap mixture we used for the "ejaculating guitar" finale during "Baby, I'm A Star" - but in reviewing the movie again, he whips off the coat prior to that song while heading for the dressing room, so I'm unsure as to it's exact origin. Perhaps it's best left to one's imagination...or a DNA expert.

The photos here will illustrate details showing wear on the left-side leather cuff protector and leather epaulet of the garment, most likely caused from Prince's guitar-playing and guitar strap. Please note there is one button missing from the four that adorn the coat just below the waist. There is also a minor flaw in the lower hem where the hem needs restitching to reattach it up with the rest of the seam and it's about 4" long. It has a pyramid-studded placard on the upper, right side and has all the original ornamentation including belt, studs, leather epaulets, and leather cuff guards. This coat was specifically designed to fit him and is custom-tailored and fitted to the actor.

Any serious Prince fan worth anything knows that Prince was not wearing the purple coat in the squirtting guitar scene so I don't know how this guy makes an assumption like that.

To pay money like that, I'd have to be buying it from Prince - in person.

$6000.00 I think he's asking way too much for the opening bid. Ebay is cool because of the bidding Competition... if he starts it that high no one will want to bid ... a No Reserve auction starting at $1.00 would be an interesting bidding war ...

I thought I once heard Prince say in an interview that his Purple Rain purple coat had been stolen from his dressing room at the Grammy's or the Oscars (or something like that). Anyone remember the conversation I am talking about?

Prince looks a litte pudgy in that bottom shot where the coat is tied closed. Hmmm
