In the dutch talkshow (BvD) were she showed up with her dad (Hans Dulfer) friday nov29
They said that since Miles Davis died, prince is probaly the best
jazz musician around these days.
He is filling the gap Miles left behind.

If Prince is jazz, jazz REALLY died.

PLEASE!

An artist incorporating jazz influences into his music does not make him a jazz musician.

Very true. So how about we nip this thread in the bud and just say that since Miles Davis died, Prince is the only musical genius of this level left to be excited about.

I would say that we don't really know how far Prince can into Jazz if he really wants to, but this statement really is a exaggerated, IMO.
Nice to see them give props, though.

Prince may fuze funk with jazz and make a unique sound of his own, but that's a bold statement: since Miles Davis died, prince is probaly the best jazz musician around these days???

I don't think so...
obviously they didn't look very hard before saying that.

What about:

John McLaughlin?

Wayne Shorter?

They should know who Victor Wooten is by now.

Who knows? Maybe Prince has some really well written compositions in his vault, but from what I've heard from his releases, it sounds more like he writes songs that just pay tribute to jazz.

Deffinately not a jazz musician. (from what I've listened too)

And yes, I have all the madhouse stuff, but the best chops come from other musicians. I love the song "8" but I wouldn't exactly call it jazz. Especially the songs with those hand claps on the 2 and 4 (most of the 16 album).

I think Candy was just trying to give Prince the best compliment she could think up at the time of the interview.

And that's sweet.

We all tell people with ugly babies that they are "so beautiful" now don't we?

Well if you read the statement and keep it in the original context, the reference is to musicianship. She said best jazz musician - Prince is easily the most overall talented musician on the planet. I think that is what the meaning of the comment was. Is there anyone who is going to be able to play jazz piano, guitar, bass, and drums like Prince?

She didnt say that the Madhouse recordings were Sketches in Spain. She didnt say that he could play trunmpet better than Wynton Marsalis. Hell, if you know jazz, you know that Miles was no where near the best technical jazz musician - his chops werent the best. He was, however, the single most important jazz musician on his time. Prince and Miles have the same maverick spirit that keeps their music in constant change. Miles left behind every great trend that he started in jazz to go the the next one. He never repeated himself. Prince is the closet to that kind of longevity and innovation today

I agree Brendan, couldn´t have said it better myself!

Miles Davis on Prince:
"Prince does so many things, it´s almost like he can do it all... For me, he can be the new Duke Ellington of our time if he just keeps at it."
from "MILES The Autobiography" page 199, Miles Davis With Quincy Troupe (First published in 1989)

If Candy had only worked with Prince, I'd say she was exaggerating. But since she has worked with many jazz artists, I think her comments ring true.
Not just as a musician, but as someone who is constantly challenging the norm, Prince is in a class by himself, as was Miles.
Musical genius definitely applies to Prince.

Do any of you lot actually listen to Miles Davis. I can never compare musicians with those that are songwriters and Musicians. Miles Davis even though he was someone who could take music and make it his own-never actual wrote music.Live you get excited, like watching maceo parker play sax. However like a good singer I find it difficult to get excited at that ability over the radio or cd. excitement for me comes when you know that the whole creationstems from that individual and in that Prince is one of the more unique. Miles Davis is not a genius-no musician is becomes all their energies are focused into that one thing. genius comes from having an overview, incorporating history and twisting it for ones own ends. I found his fusion jazz a bit musically masturbatory-creating difference for difference sake. i have read that quote from M.D before, but I think Prince is unquestionably more talented than Duke Ellington. I can see the comparison through the diversity of music but D.E. was way too cheesy.
