Prince will cash in on "1999" Can you say #1 at the bank? Found this on the wires:
PRINCE: A ONCE IN A LIFETIME PAYDAY (New York-AP) -- He has promised he won't sing it after the year is over. But you couldn't blame Prince if you hear him humming the tune "1999" next year -- all the way to the bank. As you might guess, the tune will get a lot of exposure tonight -- as just about every radio station on the planet plays the song as the calander year winds to a close. And since artists get paid every time a song is played in public, you can imagine that Prince will be looking for the mail carrier when his next royalty check comes rolling in. Rolling Stone magazine says it's expected the Artist will get at least 100-thousand dollars in royalties -- and that's just from radio stations in the U-S. Add to that airings on t-v and international use -- it will be quite the payday for the singer. An ASCAP spokesman says T-V- and international use of "1999" could be worth an extra couple hundred thousand dollars. And that doen't count the money from his New Year's Eve pay-per-view special -- after which he will "retire" 1999. Nor does it take into account the money generated from people who decide at the last minute that they must have their own copy of the song for their New Year's Eve party. | |
