Prince de pracht en praal voorbij
ook Nighttown nog even op z’n kop

Rotterdam - Waar eindigt Prince? Misschien nog wel eens in een obscuur jazzclubje geflankeerd door ouwe getrouwen als Candy Dulfer. In elk geval heeft His Royal Badness het grote, extravagante gebaar al losgelaten en is kwaliteitsmuziek meer dan ooit zijn kunstje. Het langverwachte weerzien met de grote kleine man uit Minneapolis draaide gisteravond in Ahoy' uit op een (relatief) sobere show, waarin hij en zijn zeven begeleiders zijn uiterste best deden om de 11.000 fans iets anders te bieden dan een platte greatest hits-opvoering. Diep in de nacht bleek vervolgens dat 's wereld meest getalenteerde Jehova Getuige toch nog wel van een verrassend verzetje houdt, toen hij in Nighttown tijdens het door zijn band vertolkte 'Raspberry Beret' het podium opsprong voor een onderonsje met een aantal uitverkorenen.

Niet blijven plakken aan de jaren tachtig, maar open staan voor het heden, liet Prince onze landgenote La Dulfer omroepen aan het begin van zijn optreden, dat door een vertraagde soundcheck bijna een uur later begon. Want leren is belangrijker dan weten, luidt het actuele motto van de veelzijdige Prince Roger Nelson (44). Eerder elders op deze 'One Night Alone Tour' betekende die dienstmededeling, dat de naar bekend werk hunkerende achterban bepaald niet op hun wenken werden bediend. Gaandeweg is voorheen The Artist (Formerly Known As Prince) toch wel een beetje teruggekomen van die moeilijke route. Het eerste half uur stelde Prince het geduld van het afgeladen sportpaleis flink op de proef met soms 'ingewikkelde' jazz-funksoli van zijn oogappel Candy Dulfer en haar collega-saxofonist Maceo Parker. Daarna kwam hij toch wel degelijk tegemoet aan de publieke wens om een behoorlijke hoeveelheid feestjes der herkenning en begon de hele tent ook steeds meer te bruisen. Lekkere hapjes als 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night', 'Purple Rain', 'Sometimes It Snows In April' en 'Nothing Compares 2 U' werden op de juiste momenten opgediend, waardoor de resterende, vaak zeer pittige kost lichter verteerbaar werd.

Daarbij werd in ruim tweeënhalf uur wel duidelijk dat Prince het provoceren en het cultiveren van zijn imago als Sexy Motherfucker vrijwel heeft afgezworen. De (kitscherige) pracht en praal die jarenlang zijn podiumverschijning omlijstten hebben plaatsgemaakt voor een vrij strak, functioneel decor, waarin bijvoorbeeld voor schaars geklede stoeipoezen geen plek meer is. Prince predikt anno 2002 eigenlijk heel braaf Geloof, Hoop en Liefde en doet geen moeite meer om een mysterieuze waas rond zijn persoon te handhaven. Geen geheimzinnige opmerkingen (inclusief ondeugende glimlach) meer, maar direct helder contact met zijn gehoor is thans zijn inpakstrategie. Door die gewone benadering is een avondje Prince wat minder sprookjesachtig geworden, maar gelukkig nog niet minder meeslepend.

De cultus van aftershow-stunts wenst hij voorlopig nog in stand te houden. Terwijl de halve Rotterdamse nachthoreca rekening hield met een bliksembezoek van Zijne Purperen Hoogheid, mocht rond half drie het in laatste instantie opgetuigde Nighttown het grote genoegen smaken van een korte (maar hevige) visite. Niet alleen omdat het podium aan de West-Kruiskade voor hem vertrouwd terrein is, maar ook omdat maatje Maceo Parker daar zondag speelt en Prince dan wellicht even komt kijken.

Ingewikkeld? Volgende keer moet deze journalist maar naar Frans Bauer..

This is the first time I post to the Org. Been coming here for ages though...

I have been in the concert yesterday, as a member, and it was pure magic.

He told us he really appreciates the Dutch audience, and that he felt this 'connection' between him and us... He then even played Purple Rain for us ('I practiced this tune especially for you'. Teehee...).

For me personally he didnot have to do that, for I love to be challenged with all his new, very inspiring music, but as a gift to his Dutch audience, it was well appreciated...

I loved his take on rarely played tunes as Pop Life, Gotta Broken Heart Again, Strollin', The Beautiful Ones (full version! WOOHOO!)... Need I say more? He raised the roof... amazing night!!!

Ahoy Rotterdam staff has a lot to learn, though, on how to treat the members: we were put in an overheated hallway for at least two hours: no ventilation, no food, no drinks. After this 'fun' experience I think half of us had a splitting headache, and were nearly dying of hunger and thirst, or smoke for that matter. Crappy, thoughtless staff I have to say...

Prince made us all forget this in a split second as we (finally) were allowed into the concert hall. He and his band jammed especially for us members, while talking and joking to us... very laid back...

Did I mention already Eric Leeds walked up the stage, and jammed with the band for a few minutes? So cool... He probably was only there to watch the performance from backstage, but Prince asked him to please join us for a little while...

During the show itself Prince gave Candy Dulfer all the space for solos and interacting with 'her' (Dutch) audience, and she didn't disappoint us a bit. Also, the sexy white gangster suit becomes her...

Maceo was in blood form, as always... and especially 'his' own song (well, I'm guessing it's his own...) was sooo funky!

Greedy as I am, I did miss 'Avalanche' that night... Never satisfied, I know...

I heard him perform it before, and it touched me in a big way.

Friday I'm off to Anwerp. Can't wait!

Journalist begrijpt Prince niet, evenals de meeste mensen uit het publiek. Deze hadden beter thuis kunnen blijven. Het is nu 2002!!
Tijdens het concert heb ik de zgn "fans" rondom mij afgezonderd en heel erg genoten van het concert.
Ik kijk nu al uit naar het concert van Maceo Parker a.s. zondag. Het concert in november in Ahoy ga ik ook meemaken. Misschien dat deze journalist weer komt en zich dan eerst in de muziek van Prince wil verdiepen.

De beste man heeft gewoon een mening en dat is helaas niet de onze. Beter eigenlijk, want wie zou er terugwillen naar
de tijd van uitverkochte stadions... eerlijk is eerlijk, NIEMAND. DUS, als deze meneer zich wil uitten op een manier dat het [dus] zo blijft en het kuddevolk lekker andere artiesten lastigvalt, prima. Moet er niet aan denken dat de Musicclub nog groter wordt dan we gister gezien hebben in Rotterdam. De schrijver van het stuk heeft dus gelijk in zijn 'grote publiek - review' want voor Jan Doedel is princez'n geniale originaliteit een ongrijpbaar verhaal...

Als journalisten niet weten waar ze over praten, kunnen ze beter hun mond houden. Ik heb liever een concert of aftershow met 1000 man die weten waar het over gaat, dan 1000 uitgelaten jongeren die alleen maar herrie komen maken. Persoonlijk heb ik nog nooit zo genoten van een concert van de kleine man als dat van gisteravond!!! Ik ga vrijdag weer naar Antwerpen en ik kan alleen maar zeggen dat ik het jammer vind dat ik daar nog twee nachten op moet slapen. Hier houden de echte "fans" van en Prince weet hoe het moet.

I couldn't be there but I read some reviews in the papers. And I'm proud! Not only of Prince, but maybe even more of our Dutch papers.

It's really nice how they see a *positive* influence coming from his explicit spirituality. Prince is written to be reborn both spiritually and musically.

This is pretty special for a country where people get a bit suspicious when you talk spirituality.

One paper said that since Prince is a Jehovah's Witness, he has become less spectacular and therefore less defensive. What came in its place, it wrote, is more honesty and directness.

How many artists are there, who get reviews where quality is a given fact and spirituality is the question? And where it's answered with a big Yes?

In any case: His Royal Badness has let go of his big, extravagant gesture, and has now made qualitymusic his art. The long looked forward to meeting with the big little man from Minneapolis, ended up being a relatively sober show in Rotterdam's Ahoy, in which he, with his 7 bandmembers, worked hard to offer the 11.000 fans something different, than the greatest hits-show he used to do.

In the middle of the night, it seemed that the world's most talented Jehova's Witness, is in fact interested in a little surprising fun, when he jumped on stage for a little get-2gether with a few lucky fans, during the song "Raspberry Beret"

"Don't hang on to the 80's, but be open to the present", is what Prince let the dutch La Dulfer say to the audience at the beginning of his show, which started an hour later, due to a late soundcheck.

Because: "we are not interested in what you know, but what you are willing to learn" is the actual motto of the multi-talented Prince Roger Nelson (44). In previous shows of this 'One Night Alone Tour', this motto meant that the desire for the well-known songs will not be fulfilled.

But somewhere along the tour, The Artist (Formerly Known As Prince) reconsidered that difficult route. The first half hour of the show, Prince seriously tested the patience of the fully loaded sportspalace, with the sometimes 'difficult' Jazz-Funksoli, of his favorite Candy Dulfer, and her fellow-musician Maceo Parker. After that, he did in fact meet the demand to fulfil the silent hunger of the audience to play a certain amount of known songs, which made the place go wilder and wilder.

Snacks like:
'Money Don't Matter 2 Night', 'Purple Rain', 'Sometimes It Snows In April' and 'Nothing Compares 2 U' were served at the right time, which made the often, very spicy, food easier to digest.

Besides that, in two-and-a-half hours, it became clear, that Prince has almost fully stopped the provocing and cultivating of his image as Sexy Motherfucker.

The (kitchy) glamour, which has put a border on his stage-performances for the last years, have now been replaced by a tight, functional decor, in which there is no more room for (for example) sexy dancers. Since 2002 Prince actually preaches Religion, Hope and Love, and does not make any efforts to maintain the mysterious vibe he had around him.

No secretive remarks, (including naughty smiles), but direct and clear contact with his audience, is now his persuasion-strategy. Because of this normal approach, a night out with Prince, is a little less fairy-tale-like, but fortunately not less exciting.

The tradition of aftershow-stunts, will be maintained. While half of the Rotterdam' nightlife was counting on a short visit of His Purple Majesty, the in the last minute decorated club Nighttown had the pleasure to welcome him around 2.30am for a short (but sweet) visit.

Not only because the stage of the club at the West-Kruiskade (street) is a known territory to Prince, but also because his buddy Maceo Parker will play there this sunday, and Prince might show up to watch the show.

It is so easy to write this article... but it is sooo untrue.

I don't even wanna reply to the article. I was there,..together with my girl Princess...and we had a GREAT time!!!
