CJ talks about Rave 2000

Here's what today's CJ column has to say:

Turning purple

Prince's $19.99 pay-per-view party's gotta look a lot
better on New Year's Eve than it did in real life Saturday
at Paisley Park. One attendee reports that high school
plays have been better organized. "I think House Republicans
treat Bill Clinton kinder than the Purple One treated his
fans," the party-goer said. Some people were told to be
there at 8 p.m,. with doors set to open at 9 and the show
to start at 10. April Fools in December. As of 10:30 p.m.,
lots of people were still standing outside. Women dressed
appropriately for a New Year's party were decidedly
underdressed for the temp -- 22 degrees, according to my
spies' thermostat.

The show finally started at 11:50.
"Let's Go Crazy" started, but about a third of the way
through, the star seemed miffed. Technical problems. But
don't worry; they can fix it all in the editing room. He
took a 20-minute break. Lenny Kravitz played a couple of
numbers, then Prince was back to report that there were
more bugs to work out. Off he went. It was about 1 a.m.,
and a lot of VIPs looked like they'd just about had it.
And the way out, via the coat-check area, was blocked by
Prince in the throws of something emotional. (His lips
couldn't be read.) Some Minnesota Vikings were there, along
with some local TV people and nationally syndicated deejay
Tom Joyner. Some party-goers happily stuck it out since
Prince is a musical genius.
