Gig of the Week: Prince

For those who may not have caught this today headbang
In the London UK "Metro" 30th September 2002...
"Gig of the Week: Prince"

"Quite what to expect from Prince Rogers Nelson's first UK concert dates for years is open to debate. What we do know is that there will be no pyrotechnics, Corvettes on stage or hordes of backing dancers. One of music's great showmen has chosen to come back to us with a stripped-down show aimed at his now mature following. For just like the other two pop monarchs of the 1980's - Michael Jackson and Madonna - The Purple One is now 44, and more to the point, a rather enthusiastic convert to the Jehovah's Witnesses.

A large part of the show will be devoted to the first live performances of tracks from last year's The Rainbow Children, which was only available here on import and the Net. Maybe it was decided a sprawling concept album encompassing Prince's new religious zeal and 21st-century race relations in the US wouldn't be such a hit this side of the Pond. But those who took the time to listen discovered an artist who, after a number of less-than-impressive albums, was starting to hit top form again. Amid a rather clumsy storyline about Wise Ones, Muses and Banished Ones, there is ample evidence of the inspired funkiness, slow sensuality and sheer, shimmering beauty we learned to love from pop's true genius (yes, he does deserve that moniker - never forget that as well as his songwriting and producing skills, the man plays two dozen instruments).

And for Prince to be hitting his stride again now seems somehow right: his influence on contemporary music is more sharply in focus than ever, as those who idolised him as they grew up have become today's top musicians." Siobhan Murphy

Irish journos take note - this is how to write a good story about prince (and from a free paper!). no mention of shortness, no 'artist formerly known as...', and a bit of knowledge of his past tours. still the 2 dozen instruments tho - where the hell does this come from?...electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electro-acoustic guitar, 6-string, 12-string, steel strung, classical guitar, slide guitar...?

anyway, good to see the guy getting some mainstream press coverage.

Rotterdam Afterparty in Le Bateau:

I saw Prince coming out of Le Bateau surrounded by a few body guards, and dressed in a orange suit and hair tie, after he'd been jamming with his band in the club without public, after one of his Rotterdam shows in 1992. His band was staying at the Hilton, while Prince was staying at Kuhrhaus in Scheveningen. Prince later went to an afterparty at the club in Rotterdam that is now called Baya Beach Club. My friend was inside at the party and saw him shake his booty on the dancefloor.

There's no questioning that it was an attempt at humor on your part. The issue is that it's so tired and lame and thus, worth making a comment about.

Whether an attempt at humor or a suggestion, pald1 is right. It is pretty lame.
But what can you expect when your avatar is TL showing everyone how old he is, not in years but maturity.
