By making absolutely no money from them? That doesn't make sense. You may say "Well it exposed people to his music" yet who buys bootlegs? A casual fan whom hasn't heard a Prince song in years, or a "hardcore" fan who owns everything he has ever recorded and then some? The bootleg market is supported by people who already have bought everything and will most likely continue to do so, it doesn't "win over" and new fans. And the idea that they somehow "kept the man's career going" is absurd. I understand someone who wants to hear everything Prince has ever recorded, live or in the studio. But he has told us that these items are stolen and he is asking us not to support people stealing from him. As someone who enjoys his music and Prince as an artist, why can't we respect his wishes and do as he says? What's so wrong with that? [This message was edited Wed Oct 9 23:23:04 PDT 2002 by xenophobia] I see your point, Xenophobia. I was merely stating that I think bootlegs kept a whole lot of fans interested in him. For me, it surely helped when albums like "Batman" came out that I didn't much care for. Even though the album in the stores didn't impress me, I was hearing tunes that I thought totally rocked in bootleg format. That was my thinking. I think Prince has a right to control his music, but at the same time I think he needs to lighten up. Freemyheart was not very smart to give a raspberry to Prince when asked to desist, and for that he will no doubt pay the consequences. However, I think Prince should have handled this a different way. All he did was wind up alienating yet another fan who was only promoting Prince's material. The fact is, many other artists have used bootleggers to their advantage (The Grateful Dead, Metallica and Bob Dylan spring to mind) and Prince could too! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

If Prince cared so much about all his live recordings being sold by others, why not simply sell off all these performances on his own ?
