Rolling Stone magazine, dated Sept 5, 2002, has an article titled "Rock's 50 Greatest Meltdowns". Prince is #33. Here is the write up:

Say what you want about Rolling Stone but the name changed ruined Prince's mainstream career (along with many subpar albums).

Well it just goes to show that RollingStone, like all other tabloids don't really have a clue about what they say, but say it because it makes great headlines and ppl buy the magazine...

Maybe they're a bit sore cuz Prince never gave them (or anyOne in the media) a real scoop on his career...

Prince is the only modern artist who's intentionally made a "quick exit" from the industry without doing anything stupid like drugs or suicide. Yet RollingStone calls it a meltdown.

Some people can't get over the fact that Prince does stupid shit every now and then. Whatever your argument is, writing slave on your face for anything other than a joke is disrespectful to the people that truly held that status. For a voting landowner who has a sizeable income and intelligence, he could have found better tact for his argument. Prince has probably never seen a cotton plant. He probably regrets the move to a degree but has to stand by it. Get it through your heads. Rolling Stone doesn't have a conspiracy against prince. They have better stuff to waste their time on than conspiring agains Prince, who doesn't sell many records anyway!!

The day that prince has keeloids on his back from a whip is the day that he can write Slave on his face in any clever way he'd like!

This whole thread sounds like a bunch of Michael Jackson fans, talking about all the "horrible crazy rumors" that the magazines print "just to make money". Unlike all the other magazines in the world that don't need to be profitable because they're all about the love. Prince is so far out of the mainstream that it's hard to imagine RS writing ANYTHING about Prince, pro or con, in order to "make money".

Rolling Stone pointed out that Prince did something most people found quite silly and damaged his career. Therefore Rolling Stone sucks. This is baby logic. We haven't seen "get over it, that was years ago" yet, but we will.

Incidentally, I agree that RS is a shell of its former self and getting worse. Telling an unpleasant truth about Prince is not the cause or even an indication of this.

it's anyone's guess that rolling stones wishes prince would have overdosed on drugs or started a hampster ranch. in reality, i believe prince's exit from the music scene isnt exactly a meltdown. after all, an artist can go with a bang, or slowly fade away...

Altho' I hate RollingStone and think they r biased against Prince we gotta admit that the way in which P chose 2 protest his contract (that he CHOSE 2 sign) was immature and could've been handled in a more understandable way.
