Toronto Star reviews Rave From The Toronto Star, Saturday, November 20, 1999 (Page J17) ===== UNPRONOUNCEABLE SYMBOL Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (NPG/BMG) All the ink focusing on the business dealings of The Artist Formerly Known As Prince -- his "emancipation" from his Warner Bros. contract, adventures in Internet music delivery, etc. -- has tended to overshadow his continuing musical prolificacy. With only one cut devoted to rising above the destructive "commercialization of the music" -- the funk dirge "Undisputed" -- His Purpleness is free to bat his bedroom eyes on his latest disc. Rave Un2... finds him reaching out to rock chick talents like Sheryl Crow (he delivers a boisterous '70s-style funk cover of "Everyday Is A Winding Road"), No Doubt's Gwen Stefani ("So Far, So Pleased") and AniDiFranco (playing guitar on the wistful ballad "Love U But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore"). The first single, "The Greatest Romance Evr Sold," a sultry, melancholy hip-swayer best reflects the disc's over-all mood. by Jennie Punter | |
