Producer/artist Jarvis Church references Prince

From Buzzwords website http://www.buzzwords.com/Interviews:
Excerpt from 'Church Sessions'

Jarvis Church: I isolate myself. Not to say that it’s a calculated thing, but to tell the truth, I don’t listen to that much music. It’s weird, but I can have an album in my life for a week and it will still have a lifelong influence on me. Van Morrison is one of those artists. I have one of their greatest hits albums, and I probably only listened to it for a week, but it’s still with me. The only artist I’ve actually sat down and consciously tried to deconstruct his music was Prince.

Question: And that would take a lot longer than a week.

Jarvis Church: Man, I saw Prince last week at Massey Hall (Toronto, ON) and the word genius gets thrown around a lot, but he truly deserves that distinction. He can yell louder than James Brown, get sweeter than Earth Wind & Fire and go lower than Barry White. It was flawless. I don’t know why no one else has ever mentioned this, but he’s obviously made a deal with the devil. He doesn’t age either. That’s a sure sign of a deal.

I wonder how Jarvis got his name. You see, Jarvis and Church are two streets running side by side in Toronto... Church is like The Castro of Toronto, and Jarvis (right next) is a street famous for prostitution. It's like someone had half a mind to name him Gay Hooker.

I love posts like this. I really enjoy reading what another musician has to say about Prince and his music. It's amazing that so many music listners bitch and moan about what Prince does and doesn't do well, who he is imitating etc. etc. etc. yet when a musician speaks about him they give him the utmost respect. I guess when you have the ability to actually do something you can appreciate the effort another in your craft puts into it.

I saw Jarvis Church outside the Massey Hall after the show.

I said "What you think?"

He said "Amazing!!"

This dude is like 8 feet tall...

He's got a great single out here in Canada. It's called Shake It Off... he sings most of it in falsetto!!

Himself and other members of the Philosopher Kings are huge players in the Canadian music scene writing for up and coming Sony Record projects, Nelly Furtado, a new punk rock group that they're working on, and several other projeccts I can't think of right now.

Didn't the Philosopher Kings had at least one charting US single? In any case, he and Jarvis deserve tha attention. Jarvis has a great presence and reminds me a bit of that dude in Fine Young Cannibals.

If he made a deal with the Devil, he seriously needs to re-negotiate! Satan sure hasn't delivered the hits in the past decade! lol

LOL

Don't let Prince read that, he might decide to sing out of tune for the rest of his endless life!

btw
This deal-with-the-devil story, isn't that Goethe's Faust? Isn't it a brilliant story? Isn't it just the principle of everything?
