Prince Mentioned In Article On New Artist Remy Shand

Pop spotlight: Remy Shand
Published Aug 2, 2002

TUESDAY: Declaring Remy Shand the biggest thing out of Winnipeg since Neil Young and the Guess Who isn't saying much, unless maybe you're a Crash Test Dummies fan. So how about the fact that the 24-year-old, rail-thin, blue-eyed singer and keyboardist is Motown Records' newest star and has also been heralded as the finest white soul vocalist since Van Morrison? His self-produced debut CD, "The Way I Feel," which produced the Top 10 R&B hit "Take a Message," suggests Stevie Wonder with a little Prince and Terence Trent D'Arby. (9 p.m. Tue., Fine Line Music Cafe, 318 1st Av. N., Mpls. $16. 612-338-8100.) -- Chris Riemenschneider

I've been saying this, for a couple of months now. This dude Remy, is no joke. His album is off the hook.

I give Remy Shand the benefit of the doubt since he's a rookie. He's talented in the sense that he can write, play and sing his own stuff (very rare these days), but in my honest opinion the grooves he put down on his first album are really kind of bland. There's nothing on that album that makes you say "WHO'S THAT?!!" with any kind of enthusiasm. But you do hear a lot of "oh, is white?... i didn't know that" but aside from the "oh, is he white?" reaction there's no stand out material on the album in my opinion. But like I said, he IS a rookie and he's young so I do give him the benefit of the doubt because he certainly has the potential to make an impact.
