Prince Written Tribute For Mavis Staples Late Father Pop Staples

{{{Mavis Staples now with the Capital Entertainment.
http://www.capitalenterta...nt/ms.html

Besides Mavis's bio, also included on Capital Entertainment's website
are the lyrics to a song supposedly written by Prince in 2000 for
Mavis as a tribute to her late father Pop Staples.

"How Cool Is Ur Daddy"

Hey Mavis, tried 2 call u 2day
In the middle of dialing
Kindasorta changed my mind…}}}

Couldn't figure out the words 2 say
2 make up 4 all the wasted time
Emotions overflowing in my heart
Like the wax of a candlelit flame
But nothing I could say could bring
More glory than God has already
2 ur family name…

Mavis. How cool is ur daddy?
2 bring kids in2 the world so fine
Children with voices that spoke 4 us all
No matter how troubling the times

Mavis, how cool is ur daddy?
So bright but not trying 2 outshine
The light of the sun he gave 2 everyone
Thru the gift of his cool so divine

Pops was his name, cuz that's what he was
A father 2 all who had none
An encouraging word was always heard
U felt loved when he called u, "Son"

Nobody told him what notes 2 play
He'd say "U'all can go left, but I'm goin' POP's WAY!"
And by coincidence -- that was the RIGHT way

And he got a cool slow walk…
He'd get there when he come, him rushin' - 4 what?
Even Jim Crow couldn't make him run!

Mavis, how cool is ur daddy?

How cool "IS" we say, cuz nothin' is past
Pop's WAS cool, IS cool and WILL everlast
So those who know better will hold back the tears…
The cool that he was will always be here.

To be honest, I don't know if the name "Jim Crow" was actually taken from a real live human being. But the name Jim Crow has come to symbolize the racist laws that were predominate in the Southeastern part of the United States. For example, laws that would not allow Blacks to eat in a public restaurant or vote - just to name two.

truly beautiful and true words directly from the heart...i would love to hear Prince perform this song with Mavis...that would be wonderful!

I'm sure Pop is smiling from Heaven; who couldn't smile to such a beautiful song? smile

A song filled with everlasting hope, love, joy and truth. That is what life's suppose to be all about!

Yes, I am ! ... Perhaps being European I missed a History lesson or two. Anyway, this is one of those things that I'm glad of not being aware of.

really sweet lyrics . . . . i like "so bright but not trying to outshine"
. . . i remember the Staples singing in concert and Pops was on stage playin' his guitar . . . kinda lowkey profile . . . . but had a very proud look on his face as he watched his daughters. . . . . .
