Billboard article on 1999 tribute concert The Roots To Perform Classic Prince LP Live http://www.billboard.com/...117_02.asp Hip-hop outfit the Roots, former Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid and lead singer Corey Glover, and a host of guests will perform tracks from Prince's acclaimed 1982 album "1999" Dec. 11-12 at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music (BAM). Dubbed "Party At The End Of Time: 1999 Live," the event will celebrate both the impending millennium and Prince's impact on the past two decades' worth of pop music. All 11 tracks from the disc are slated to be performed, including such hit singles as "Little Red Corvette," "Delirious," and the title track, a long-standing pre-millennium party anthem. Scheduled to join the Roots and Reid at both performances are PM Dawn, former Brand New Heavies vocalist N'Dea Davenport, West African musician Angelique Kidjo, poet/performer Carl Hancock Rux, and producer/composer Coati Mundi. The shows will be produced by Danny Kapilian, a familiar face at such BAM events as its annual Rhythm & Blues Festival. The Roots released the concert album "Come Alive" (MCA) earlier this month; it stands at No. 50 on The Billboard 200 this week. The group's most recent studio set, "Things Fall Apart," was released in March and peaked at No. 4 on The Billboard 200. Prince, currently operating under the moniker The Artist, released the new album "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" (NPG/Arista) Nov. 2. He performed an energetic live set for the U.K. media Monday in London. | |
