Another report on Mermaid Theatre show As promised my full report on The Mermaid Theatre performance. I won't get into the Clive Davis part as it was already posted here by someone else. About the remixes before the performance Clive Davis said the first one was
the Neptune's Remix featuring Q-Tip (it was played entirely)About the second he just said it was a 'Dance Remix' and only a one minute excerpt was played. The performance was witnessed by about 400 to 500 people according to me. It began at 17h00 local time until 18h20 local time. The band members : [pre:0deadbeef0] The Artist (whatever, but mainly vocals and guitar) Larry Graham (bass guitar) Kirk Johnson (drums) Morris Hayes (organ/synths) Mike Scott (guitar) Kip (organs/synths) 3 Hornheads (saxophone/trombone and trumpet) [/pre:0deadbeef0] The stage was with the symbol on the floor and in the back was the big symbol with all the lightbulbs like used on the European Tour 1998. The Artist wore his purple suit with glitters on it. He had a gold chain with symbols around his waist and one around his neck. The set : [pre:0deadbeef0] 1. LET'S GO CRAZY with a fairly long intro (he played on the blue angel) 2. She's Always In My Hair during which he runs up in the audience 3. U Got The Look 4. Pop Life sample 5. Kiss with samples of Face Down, My Name Is Prince, Live 4 Love and Love 2 The 9's. The intro was quite long and he ran into the audience again to pick 6 people to dance on stage. The Artist took his white bass guitar then and did a little jam with Larry. He then yelled 'London Can U Dance' and let the people dancing sing the chorus (which they did perfectly, even the high notes). 6. Gett Off with a long intro on guitar + the version was much heavier then usual. He jammed with Larry and got his purple symbol guitar for a very relaxed rendition of the song. At one moment he even joined Kip on the synths but he kept on playing his guitar as well (a true musical genius if you ask me). 7. Gett Off Housestyle for which he brought out the Hornheads. The Artist joined Kip again on the synths for a salsa-like improvisation. He then threw away his jacket to do little dances on the beat. 'How Y'all Feeling' 'Like The New Album' What We Like 2 Do Now' 'Turn Around' 8. Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothing. After a while he did his usual 'You Ain't Ready For Me Yet' routine. Very good response from the audience. He also did some hip swings on the drum beat of Kirky, on the trombone player's solo and on the Mike Scott solo (he really looked different in his long red robe and without his hat and bald). The Artist walked over to Kip for a little improvisation on the synths - it was turned into a little excerpt of 9. Hypno Paradise and later into a 10. 'Get Up, Get On Up Chant'. The Hornheads also did a little solo on the kick drum by Kirky. 11. It's Alright was introduced by Larry who talked a bit. The Artist walked into the audience again and returned with a woman/girl. She danced a bit on the stage and he turned around her for some dancing as well. He then let the beat gradually slow down and to let it turn into : 12. Purple House (Red House adapted version). The strangest thing happened when all of a sudden the woman/girl started to sing the song by herself. He then joined her. He called her Andrea and it looked like he knew here (I don't know who she is myself). 13. The Jam was played on his white bass guitar again and included solo's of each band member. The Artist also thanked Clive Davis and Tina Graham did her towel routine around Larry. The Artist then said 'Peace And B Wild', took a bow and left. A 5 minute long applause followed and everybody came back for the encores. 14. The Greatest Romance Ever Sold was a live remix version with Hornheads and organs. After the song ended he called a 'Bring The Beat Back' after which followed a clarinet solo by the female member of the Hornheads. The Artist did a little speech/rap on the beat and a trombone solo followed. 15. Baby Knows was played with his blue angel. The harmonica in the song was replaced by Hornheads. The Artist did another solo and points out into the audience 'You You You You Come Dance'. During the next minutes people were asked on stage and he also asked anybody to come and join him to dance on stage. Eventually 35 people were dancing around him. He also invited Beck on stage, but he looked rather shy and very quickly mingled to the back of the crowd. 16. Release Yourself was sung by The Artist, Larry Graham and Kip. By this time Andrea and Tina also danced in the great party on stage. The Artist then called out 'On The One - Thank You - Londooooon' and it was over. With the lights fading he also said 'You Have Just Been Rampsacked By The NPG' and that was it. [/pre:0deadbeef0] As we were leaving the building everybody received a free copy of the full album. Already had it, but now I have a sealed one as well with a little sticker on the reverse covering the original barcode, replacing it with another one. The Yormeister Production 1999 15. | |
