Glenn Lewis gets Princely invitation
By KAREN BLISS -- For JAM! Music

The last time Canadian R&B singer Glenn Lewis was at Toronto's Massey Hall, he was given a standing ovation. This time, he got an invitation -- from Prince.

Lewis -- who opened for Alicia Keys at Massey back in January to an amazing hometown reception -- was standing against the wall on the floor level of the theatre enjoying the show like any other fan Saturday night (June 15) when Prince asked him to join him on stage. }}}

"I heard about the show but I thought I was going to be out of town, so I just put it out of my mind," recounts Lewis, who has spent little time in Canada since releasing his album "World Outside My Window", featuring the hit single "Don't You Forget It".

"But I made it back that evening, and I happened to be driving by Massey Hall and said, 'Wait a minute! That performance is tonight. Let's see if we can get in.' I was with friends, got in, standing on the side, trying to catch the last 45 minutes of the show, and all of a sudden he requests the house lights to come on. He's jamming, and he calls me up."

Lewis, who had never before met Prince, can't remember what song he was invited to perform.

"It was a jam, so I actually made up whatever. I think he eventually either converted it into one of his songs or it was one of his songs. I think it was just a jam because of the way the audience had reacted."

Lewis, whose summer tour with Tweet was cancelled, will kick off a headlining tour of Canada, starting with an appearance at the Caribana festival.

His booking agent is also putting together a bill with Donell Jones and Raphael Saadiq for North America, says Lewis.
