Minneapolis hip-hop scene compared to early 1980s Prince & friends

http://www.startribune.co...94006.html

Rhyme Sayers Entertainment is the first locally based and Minnesota-oriented label to earn a national reputation since the heyday of Minneapolis indie rock with Twin/Tone in the mid-80s and AmRep in the early '90s.

{{{And while none of the RSE artists are likely to go No. 1 and star in their own movie, they are competitive and brotherly in a way that recalls the early '80s run of Prince, the Time and Flyte Tyme.}}}

The difference, of course, is that Rhyme Sayers is all hip-hop. For the most part, successful rappers have been embedded in the corporate, major-label music world for the past 20 years. Big contracts, royalty checks and backstage soirees aren't just the dreams of most rappers; they're also the subject matter.

No, the difference IS...Rappers/Hip-Hoppers...don't know how to play music.

To Flying Cloud!

Yo!

I can not speak for all Hip Hop artists (Most are complete crap!). I for one take great pride in the music that I create.

No, I might not play an "instrument" but through sampling I take tiny snippets of music from old obscure records and hook up a completely new track. And certainly not something that the original artist had in mind when making their track!

In addition to this, the rapper that I work with has never come up with a line that I have heard elsewhere.

May I suggest that you try to be creative and not close minded about all Hip Hop and sampled based music.

Peace.

THANK YOU!
I myslef am a local hip-hop promoter in the twincities and also manage some acts along with a website(www.dunation.com). The Minneapolis hip-hop scene is alive and well and is one of the most exciting scenes (underground hip-hop) in music right now.
RSE gets full credit with talent such as Slug(Atmosphere) who has played with Prince once or twice and also Musab,Brother Ali and Eyedea and Abilities. Right now its so fun how different crews and such are in battle mode around the city like in the movie Purple Rain with diffrent artists trying to get known. Atmosphere has just sold out the First Ave mainroom to the brim for the 5 stright time.
And this just isnt your average "bling-bling ingornat" hip-hop...go check out Atmosphere's "God Loves Ugly" and see what your missing or better yet go to a show.
And for the fans going to the celebration, you better get used to hip-hop/spoken word cuz one of the cities finest mc's Toki Wright is hosting one of the stages at the Park, so yall get a taste of what we are about...

SLUG IS THE NEW PRINCE...well maybe not...LOL
