The Purple Reign by Angelou J. Flores Prince still winning raves 24 years into his career.
The 44 year-old genre-bending icon will come to Winnipeg on June 6 for a historic appearance in the biggest urban music show to hit the city. Riding the critical rave over The Rainbow Children, Prince announced the Canadian leg of his “One Nite Alone” tour on May 22 via his NPG Music Club with tickets going for $150+taxes across Canada. The tour schedule also includes stops in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. {{{At every stop, the tour has been getting press props of its own since its launch in Saginaw, MI with a 2 hour-plus set of TRC and classic material.}}} He will be accompanied by a stripped-down version of the New Power Generation: John Blackwell [drums], Rhonda Smith [bass], Greg Boyer [horns], Renato Neto [keys] and Maceo Parker and Candy Dulfer [horns] on select dates. The Canadian dates precede his annual Celebration party at Paisley Park from June 21-27. This year’s guests include Musiq, Sheila E, Rachelle Farrell, Maceo Parker – who has been appearing on select ONA dates – Victor Wooten, Norah Jones and Bernard Allison. Parker will not be at the Walker show – he’s booked for a solo date in New York. Prince has never played Winnipeg but did announce a show last year only to pull the date less than a week later after the death of his father, John L. Nelson, who had collaborated with his son on a handful of albums, most notably the post-purple “Around the World in a Day.” He has not had a major commercial hit since Diamonds & Pearls, but has sustained an almost cult-like following to this day with post-Warner releases like TRC Crystal Ball, Emancipation, New Power Soul, Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic and the just released One Nite Alone – which is only available to NPGMC members. He was also the 80’s most heavily-bootlegged artist. He has also managed to touch modern pop music via Alicia Keys and SoCal ska-poppers No Doubt. Keys is currently riding up the charts with her version of Prince’s “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore,” a bootleg and live favourite for many years before being released officially on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s Girl 6 film. No Doubt, on the other hand, include a collaboration with Prince on Rock Steady; a return favour for Gwen Stefani’s guest spot on Rave. The Prince-fashioned “Minneapolis sound” is also present via Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’ chart-climbing work and on The Neptunes’ hit making production. His influence on the current crop of neo-soul slingers is also undeniable with D’Angelo, Maxwell, Musiq, Glenn Lewis and Remy Shand all crediting Prince as a major inspiration. His outspoken views on artists’ creative rights – along with Public Enemy, George Michael and Courtney Love – have also shaped the business practices of many new school artists, who are increasingly taking hold of the business end of their careers. As of press time, the only tickets remaining were a select few on the floor and in the last half of the balcony. .::'xpert lover, my baby. ever had a crystal ball?' - crystal ball::. | |
