Why did someone say earlier that the versions of the tracks we rec'd last year were different on the cd? Apparently they're exactly the same, right? As in "A Case of U" still fades out at the end?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't it say "(Excerpt)" when it was released in January? I'm pretty sure that it did...I must say that while I LOVE all 4 of those songs, I was hoping that the released versions would be slightly different instrumentation or the full-length versions. There are only about 5 songs on the whole disc that we haven't heard....I don't know. While I'm sure I'll love this cd, it's certainly pretty ridiculous for him to have released almost half of the cd last year. THAT'S my argument....not that the cd is too short (although it's pretty annoying....i mean, just BARELY over a half hour!) but that he should have released other tracks in January. Why does he always insist on making us pay multiple times for the same thing? It just seems to totally go against his whole "evil record company" stance.

If Prince decides that the CD should only contain 10tracks, and the length of the whole CD is just over 35 minutes, then it's his right to do so. If you feel left out by the idea of the NPGMC, don't do it then, it's as plain simple as that.
Who says that the other to be released CD's - later on this year - are going to be short as this one? And who says that there isn't going to be anything else released through his NPGMC for instance, just music to download again.. Or another album to be released later on this year? Or a concert recording through his website? whatever? and if not, so be it.. i mean, it's his thang, and he decides, wether you like it or not.
I'm glad there is still comming out so much music, considdered teh fact that Prince isn't that hot anymore. There are other artists that have much more problems getting one note released.. Prince decided to go alone, so this is the result we get, and what he wants eventually.
I do hope this CD will be released in the shops as well, as i think a lot of 'other' prince fans are intersted in it as well. Let's hope he even brings his show overhere in Europe soon.. I'm so anxious to see him perform again, cause i hardly can't think Prince touring within 10 years time over and over... hey who knows...

I cant wait to get this! I don't care that its only 35 minutes. I mean every song is just Prince playing the piano and singing. Who wants to hear 70 minutes of that?! Now if this was a cd of vault tracks or something and it was 35 minutes I would be pissed! I'm looking forward to getting this!
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 6, 6...

Does the track title "Arboretum" mean that's what the big building next to the Park is?

forgive me if i'm asking you to repeat yourself (i haven't seen all your posts here or else i missed the ones that might give me an anwer to my question..), but do you have some insider info or something? how do you know what Prince is up to as far as the Club or what he's going to do?

i'm just curious because your post implies you know more than the "regular" NPGMC member and i'm curious how you come by your knowledge.

thanks. smile

How do the tracks sound, all lovey-dovey? How was the CD sent? First Class? Are the versions really different from what we got in January? Particularly, Pearls Before The Swine? I've heard the samples on the site and they sound different.

Can't wait until it arrives. I live in Paris at the moment and the French post is horribly slow.
And about the length of the album; that is VERY kewl. I hope the days that artists feel the need to fill every minute of a disc are over.
Best albums are still the LP duration albums. I do not care if there are only 8 songs, even. Remember Dirty Mind?
Joni Mitchel's Blue?
Stop whining about length, it's what you do with it. (I feel a gay theme coming on again)

No, Arboretum Blvd is the name of Hwy 5 in Chanhassen.

I have to agree with gooey some of the best albums are short in length but full of good quality songs.
Let's wait till the whole year has passed and then we can judge on what we have received as members, I am sure there's still lots of good things coming our way.
European tour for example smile (please)

One Nite Alone - the stark/spooky opening key strikes set the dim mood for the album.
He alternates between almost speaking (in low voice) to singing with his falsetto
througout much of the song.

U're Gonna C Me - This song includes the lyric
'send me a page on my 2 way, i'll hit u back with no delay'. Lyrics like these
support the idea that Prince does not spend enough time developing his songs.
With repeat listenings, you really admire how nice his voice is. This song would be
so 1/2 assed sung by anyone else. His voice has such power that he makes this
very average song - better than it is.

Here On Earth - slow spoken build up. He describes a nightmare he's had of his wife
never wanting to see him or ending the relationship - he awakes and
realizes it was all a dream, and begins to softely sing a short verse before a short
instrumental ending. Again, you are amazed by how much emotion he can
convey with that voice. To hear him so clearly with just a piano is thrilling.
The song should have continued for another 10 minutes.

A Case Of U - After years and years of doing this one live, he finally records it. It's a shame that he
only sings the one verse of this Canadian classic. I would love to hear him sing
the part where Joni sings ' i drew a map of Canada, O Canada, with your face sketched on
it twice'.
The verse he does sing however means far more when you realize that he dedicated
the song to his recently deceased father with whom he had a special relationship
although estranged in recent years.
It's funny how he often hides his most personal songs in limited releases. In 1998 he
released a five disc set called 'Crystal Ball' One of the discs was an all accoutic album
entitled 'The Truth'. On this album was a song barely 2 minutes long entitled 'Comeback'.
This touching song was about his infant son who passed away 18 months before of a
genetic disorder.

Have a Heart

Objects in the mirror - both of these songs seemed to make little impact on me. I don't believe too much
effort went into these songs..

Avalanche - The soft beginning of this song does not prepare you for the part where Prince calls
Abraham Lincoln a racist who never wanted to free the slaves. What would a Prince
album be without one rant. In a clever lyric that ends the song he compares a particular
racist swindle to one snowflake in an avalanche.

Pearls B4 Swine - piano and accoutic guitar. Catchy song.. probably one of the easiest to digest
tracks on the whole album. Did you ever think you'd hear the man who wrote
'head' sing the line ' can I offer you baklava, or a bagel with cream cheese' ?

Young and Beautiful - Most upbeat song on the album...it has a hippy flavour to it. Starts off with
an oriental sounding piano part.

Aboretum - instrumental.

The length dosent bother me. This 30 minutes r far more interesting and better than twelve predictable Kirk J tripple albums like "Emancipation" and "NPS".

But yes, I think theblueangel got some good points there. "One Nit.." is VERY GOOD, but it feels a bit annoying already having some of the tracks.

Peace!

I'm more pissed off with last years downloads than this years CD's.

They gave us The Rainbow Children and these One Night Alone tracks as our monthly "exclusive" downloads, knowing that they were going to release them on CD as well. Not that they did it in a secretive way, we knew what was happening, but now the CD's have both been released I do feel a bit cheated out of 2 months downloads.

I'm a member of the club. I even downloaded the songs, but I never really got around to listining to these trax. Never even got around to put them on a CD. So when I get it in the mail, it'll be like brand new. I didn't plan this or do it on purpose, it just happened. Why it happend is that I don't like to listen to music on my roomates computer because he has all the weird spatializers going to his speakers making the sound "3-D". I hate those things, they ruin the music and it doesn't sound like it's supposed too. Also our burner is problematic and disconnected, so it never got to CD. I's just wait for it in the mail, and it'll all be new!!!! smilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmilesmile

The album is nice. It's not AMAZING or groundbreaking and a few of the tunes do sound unfinished but it's a nice listen. I'm assuming Prince agrees with that as he calls the album a collection of demos. The music proves that Prince still does have a few melodies left in him. "Young and Beautiful" leaves you wanting to hear a more fleshed out version of it. It sounds like a good idea for an uptempo pop/rock tune that was left unfinished.

Man, I'm happy. Got home to receive "One Nite Alone" today through the post. Listening to it whilst typing and loving every minute. Yes, it is short but as somebody has already commented you don't really need 74 minutes of Prince playing piano.

His voice sounds better than ever and by having a single backing is highlighted, bringing out raw emotion particularly on the first 4 tracks (yes, we've all had them for a while but placing them on one album like this really establishes how good they are). "Avalanche" is the best of the "never released before in any form whatsoever". A great song.

Need to listen to the album a few times before fitting it mentally into my top ten. Overall, a nice accompaniment to The Truth from a few years back.

Not sure how the album would be accepted by the general public - a bit too class for most in my view. People don't know what they're missing!
