Prince Interactive

Yes, yes, we're supposed to use some symbol when referring to him, followed by "the artist formerly known as Prince." But in this disc, the symbol man looks like Prince, sings snippets of old Prince songs like Prince, and is obsessed with both himself and scantily clad women (in that order) like Prince. Despite all, this is a compelling title.

The premise of this hybrid Mac/Windows disc isn't radically different from old text-based quest games - you're looking around a mansion of epic opulence and questionable taste, picking up keys here and there that give you access to an inner sanctum, The Dome Room, for a "special treat" (don't ask).

The quality of the 3D renderings that make up the Playboy Mansion - er, Prince's place - puts the disc in almost the same league with Myst. Of course, in Myst you don't encounter egos and implants as large. But Prince interactive does have its pitfalls. For space and/or licensing reasons, many of the video and audio clips of the
Man are truncated. The title is also very demanding - it needs 15MB of hard disk space and a video setup capable of displaying 65,536 colors on Windows systems.
(Mac users can get away with thousands of colors, 8MB of RAM, and 10MB of disk space). But even if you only half like Prince, you'll want to check this disc out.
List Price: $59.95. Graphix Zone/Compton's NewMedia, 800/862-2206.
