Matt 'Doctor' Fink Interview Event: Matt ‘Doctor’ Fink Interview
Place: The Ernest Experience Radio Show Dates/Times: May 1st through May 31st , show runs 24/7 on Live365.com with both dial-up and broadband connections {{{Internet stream: http://www.theernestexperience.net The Ernest Experience Radio Show starts off its Second season w/ a trip to the doctor. Matt ‘Doctor’ Fink, former keyboardist and vocalist for Prince and The Revolution and early versions of the New Power Generation, can be heard on the May edition of the Ernest Experience Radio Show. The interview will run the whole month of May.}}} Doctor Fink joined Prince’s band in 1978 after people like Sue Ann Carwell, Jimmy Jam and Ricky Peterson (who was initially hired) auditioned before him. And after many phone calls to Owen Husney, Prince’s then manager, Fink got the audition and the job. Prince disbanded The Revolution in 1986, but Doctor Fink stayed in the band until late 1990. Doctor Fink answers questions some fans have always wondered about. Why did the Revolution break up? Why didn’t Wendy & Lisa come to the Prince: A Celebration at Paisley Park in 2000? What did he do after he left Prince’s camp? Why did he wait until this time to finally release his own CD? What does the think of other Revolution members releasing their albums so soon after leaving The Revolution? Why did he have only one line in Purple Rain? Why did he not have an appearance in Graffiti Bridge despite still being in the band? What scene w/ him and Jill Jones got cut from Purple Rain? How did he become The Doctor? What music is he listening to these days? What current artist does the think could be the female Prince of this generation? All those questions and more will be answered during the interview. The interview will also showcase 4 new tracks from the Doctor’s new CD Ultrasound, including “Cyber Monkey”, “Night Flight”, “Ecstasy” and the title track, plus possibly more. The Ernest Experience Radio Show is broadcast 24/7 on http://www.Live365.com, with both dial-up and broadband streaming links, and can be found at http://www.theernestexperience.net There are Radio links in the drop down menu as well as the Quick Link section in the right column of the page. We know some of the answers to these questions, like Fink wasn't in Graffiti Bridge because he was busy programing synths for the nude tour, and he became the "doctor" because the "jailbird" outfit didn't take off. Still, be interesting 2 hear what he has 2 say. I wanna hear the Wendy & Lisa excuse 2 not going 2 2000 celebration (apart from the fact they were in New Zealand). hehehe. The interview will be a total of 70 minutes, so there are more than just these questions that were asked. Wendy and Lisa weren't in New Zealand. And the "excuse" as to why they weren't at the Celebration was more of a Prince issue than a W&L issue. It was a great interview. I've talked to Fink a couple of times since the interview and he's said a few other things. If I can get it cleared w/ him to air some of those conversations, I may very well do piece together a follow up. Fink does discuss his hesitation about the Purple Rain film in general, his favorite recording sessions and tours, and more. Thanks for tuning in!

He's got an album out!! Fink has had his album out since September actually. Drew Seton-Warner is his webmaster, and has done a remix of the title track to Ultrasound. Drew has also put together Rosie Gaines' site. He's also done remixes for Madonna, and a load of other people. There's a link to his site on both Fink and Gaines' site. He is soon releasing his own CD of technofunk. By the way, the sound samples on Fink's site doesn't do the CD justice.

"Wendy and Lisa weren't in New Zealand. And the "excuse" as to why they weren't at the Celebration was more of a Prince issue than a W&L issue."
There were reviews on Neil's site from the shows, and yes Wendy and Lisa WERE in New Zealand at the time. And believe me, the reason they haven't played with him is because of Prince. It's just a matter of his way, or no way. And honestly no one wants to see them play more than I do, but I like Wendy and Lisa's suggestion of doing something new instead of rehashing the hits medley again.

I think Fink might know what he's talking about as well. Don't judge until you hear the interview.

Sure, we won't judge the interview, I can't wait to hear it.
The fact is Wendy & Lisa recorded Neil Finn's "One Nil" in New Zealand and the night of the 2000 celebration was the same night Neil Finn done a showcase, previewing songs from that album. There was lots of talk back and forth of trying to get them to come, even the notion of flying them to Paisley for that one off performance. W&L said a partial excuse was Neil Finn had contracted them for that gig, and could not back out on him. Weather that excuse is true or not, who knows. Perhaps what Dr Fink says about WHY they chose not to play is correct, they have their reasons. Even Neil Finn has said himself that W&L were offered a Revolution reunion, if they agreed to become Jehovah's Witnesses. (Which seems a funny story, eh)? Im Sure Fink knows the negotiations that went on to get W&L to Celebration, but the fact of the matter is, they were in New Zealand at that time. Thanks for bringing us the Dr, ernestsewell. Keep up the great work! Xperience the Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com/

It's probably the whole set of circumstances, but there's always a desire to narrow these things down to one factor. Like, maybe if they had been in California instead of across the widest ocean on the planet, they would have done it, greatest hits or not? Or maybe they said "if we come all this way, it has to be special.." and Prince said they were just going to be very laid back and do some hits and that wasn't good enough. That's why people often end up saying "it just did not happen". Did W&L ever comment directly?

Regarding the possibility that W&L didn't want to do a GH set, IF that is true, I don't think that Prince's insistence on playing the hits would be such a big deal. It was billed as a celebration of his music, after all, and I can't imagine a more legitimate occasion to play classic Prince hits.

I personally would rather hear them do "Sometimes it Snows in April" or "Power Fantastic" acoustic than "Kiss" or "Let's Go Crazy" again. And regardless, had they not been commited to Neil Finn, they would have gone to play the hits or whatever.

I was at the celebration 2000, and I stood next to Dr.Fink on one of the nights party's and he was talking about Wendy & Lisa - he was saying that he had spoke to them that night and that they had really wanted to be there but they were with Neil (Finn) and could not make it, Wendy & Lisa also posted a message on their site the week of the celebration saying the same
peace xx. | |
