Review: Iglesias gifted and charming, but no Prince
Chris Riemenschneider
Star Tribune

Published Mar 28, 2002
{{{It takes a certain kind of singer to come into Minneapolis and perform Prince's "Purple Rain." Latin pop star Enrique Iglesias proved to be that type, and then some, at his sold-out and utterly cocksure concert Wednesday at the Historic Orpheum Theatre.

As vain and swaggering as Prince was when he wrote that 1984 pop anthem, the 26-year-old son of Spanish star Julio Iglesias obviously is not intimidated about following in anyone's footsteps.}}}

Most of the music at the concert was far removed from his father, but it still sounded regurgitated off the radio from some previous decade -- whether it was Madonna's dance-oriented work of the '90s (as heard in his "Rhythm Divine") or Night Ranger and Journey's rock radio anthems of the '80s ("Don't Turn Off the Lights"). He even did a bland, unoriginal cover of Steve Miller's "The Joker" for a finale.

As staid as his music, Igles ias stood in the Orpheum spotlight like a Calvin Klein model on a runway. His muscular biceps were on full display under a tight T-shirt, and his long legs were encased in snakeskin pants. Any guy as straight as a No. 2 pencil could have taken one look at the young, Spanish-born singer and known why men were outnumbered by women 50 to one.

Plainly, Iglesias knew why, too.

Unlike seemingly every other Latin pop star, he didn't dance a single bit, not even during his current hit "Bai lamos" ("let's dance"). Maybe Enrique doesn't have any moves. Maybe he just didn't want to shake his bon-bon like the less-trendy Ricky Martin.

Either way, just him standing there poised and pretty was enough to keep the shrieks and cries of ecstasy coming nonstop from the crowd. You can imagine the noise, then, when he fondled and straddled one of his backup singers during the over-sexed ballad "Could I Have This Kiss Forever?"

The guy can sing, though. While he overdramatized such weepy, I'm-a-broken-hearted-Spaniard-so-love-me ballads as "Si Tu Te Vas" -- territory he should leave to his father -- his voice was as well-toned as his body in more amped-up songs such as "Escape" and a later ballad, the hit "Hero."

Iglesias showed a good-natured personality, too. After polling the crowd for applause from women versus men (a paltry response from the latter), he said, "People think my shows are sissy, but really, the best place for a guy to get lucky is at an Enrique Iglesias concert."

Yeah, if only they ever took their eyes off you.

SWANG

Enrique's current bass player is the bass player from Days Of Wild. Remember the Prince tribute band from NYC that played at the first celebration. Wonder if that influenced his decision to play PR in Minnie.

Ala, a seguir.

Enrique Iglesias has no talent at all... he is just a posh millionaire that doesn't know what to do with his time; but then again he is not the only one out there doing that...
pd. Delores, simpático dices? más bien rematadamente pijo, no crees? por cierto, magnifica foto la tuya.

No sabía que simpático y pijo fueran términos contradictorios.

¿Te gusta mi foto?, me alegro, a mi me encanta.

I don't like that "Hero" song. It's sappy.

I have been saying that since day one to people, Enrique sounds like he is constipated when he sings. I am so glad that finally somebody can agree with me on that! Thanks RaneStarr.
