In talking about his appearance at the MTV Awards, David Bowie has revealed on his website that
"Several performers have dressed up as famous opera characters to emphasize that this years award show is taking place at the Lincoln Center Opera House. Bowie appears as Mephistopheles from the opera "Faust."
