haven't heard the song yet, but i njoy some of her other joints. she gots talent and soul, no way she could ever do it like P, but hey, lots of folks have done fair work on some of the man's tunes. just gotta take it for what it is, a young lady who grew up on the funk just like we have.

Alicia Keys latest single release to radio is "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?" - good timing! Hopefully people will remember who did the song first!

Every song Prince tries to hide or giveaway is a smash, but when he puts out his own stuff, nothin happens. He needs a manager!

I give Alicia props for her taste. It's a great song that deserves the attention that it will get. But that Casio drum rhythm #17 on her version totally turned me off. I don't doubt that she could do it justice live with just her and the piano, but somebody should have "accidentally'' erased that pedestrian drum track at the studio.
... WHAT version of Just My Imagination? I've got to hear that one! Is it sung in falsetto or deeper or what?

Her version BLOWS...

I think P was being nice when he told her he liked it, trying to encourage the kid. He had to cringe when he heard that damn drum machine! :X

Unfortunately, I can't see that happening. It'll just be the usual of everyone thinking she wrote it.

In fact, I heard that she'd been going round saying it was written by her about her ex-boyfriend. Surely this can't be true!

As far as I'm concerned, NO-ONE should cover Prince songs. In my opinion, they always come out sounding much worse than the origonal.

For what? Moneyminders are like parasites, they pose as wheelers and dealers for your rights and most companies say that you need them, but I kick back, observed and watch 'em bleed 'em, artists young and old...

Erm...sorry...got a little bit intense there...

Well, there's a surprise! It was only a matter of time before she released something to do with Prince. She was already very obvousily trying to be a female Prince ( a Princess if U like ). biggrin

I have picked up records by artists based on covers, and descovered some good artists that way. So if the single goes big and gains Prince some fans that's good.

I just wish her version wasn't such a basic copy of the original. The orginal is one of my fave P songs ever. Maybe one of my fave songs ever. It's so different than almost everything he ever did. But the way she copied it may very well have ruin it. It may sound well produced to some people now (though I'm not one of them) but in the future it will be obvious to everyone that it was a copy with some updates to sell it to 15 year old girls. Too bad.

Case in point. "Blinded by the Light".
Springsteen: wrote it, played it, it went nowhere, but it kicked ass.
Manfred Man: played it, over produced it, edited out sections of the lyrics, made a number one hit out of it, and ruined it because that's the only version people know.

am I making sense?

I didnt like her album, and not this cover too....the ´I must be modern´ syndrom....´just put a programmed beat and you will be modern and hot´...
People made all that fuss just because she plays acoustic piano, but I didnt notice nothing so spectacular when I listened to the album.
The cover of Joshua Redman is a lot better

To hear this recording log in to the above site.

It's not half bad. The half that is bad is the beginning drum machine.

Enjoy.

Peace.

Her version is alright at best, but the attention to any great Prince songs is always good, in my opinion.

I know he doesn't like people using his songs to get famous...but i see like this: Prince is a great songwriter, and songs like Nothing Compares 2U, Adore(Bilal was going-or did?- to record it), She's Always in my Hair, and countless others NEED to be heard by the masses. Like the Ladder & Temptation, these are incredible songs, and don't deserve to be buried in the past.

I've always felt "the Ladder" off of Around the World was a point by Prince to say..."Hey, this song is similar to Purple Rain in many ways, but how many of you missed it?? How many of you jumped off the band wagon just because it wasn't on MTV or in a hit movie??"

The Ladder and Temptation are STILL on my top 20 favorite songs. Total headtrip !! ("OH SILLY MAN...you have to want her for the right reasons)

OWWWAAA!!

Peace...mrchristian (formerly sanchristian)

At the same time, i would hope other artists would cover lesser known songs like "How Come U...", "Adore", "17 Days"(Living Colour), etc.

When Genuwine covers 'When Doves Cry', or Mariah Carey covers 'The Beautiful Ones', or when 'Purple Rain' is covered for the umpteenth time, you can tell these artists don't care about the original creative beauty as much as their pocket books.

peace
