"Samuelle"

(written by Vanity,1984)

Samuelle,this is your lover calling,Samuelle
Samuelle,this is your lover calling
Samuelle,do you belong to Marylyn?
I know she could never love your heart
Like me
I'm quite sure we belong together

Oh Samuelle, you cannot tell a lie
It echoes across the moon and the sky

Valerie,Valerie,Valerie,this is your conscience calling
Valerie,Valerie,Valerie,I don't wanna hear ya
I do recall carnivals were filled up with crazy guys and paper dolls
Thought it would last forever

Oh Samuelle,I'm running down the aisle
Wedding lace was written all over

I really want you,I really do
I really love you,rap on door, rap on door
ring bell,ring bell

Naughty little thing,we may never know
The prince and the showgirl
wonders if never,ever

Oh Samuelle,I cannot tell
If I sing to you, will you ring my doorbell?
Ring my doorbell,I really want you
Ring my doorbell,I really do
Ring my bell,I really love you

Time will tell, all those nights I sat up alone
And stared at the phone
Well,I'm calling ,my shadow calling
"Samuelle",I cannot let you go
I have thrown all the snowballs I can throw
Oh! Oh!
I know you love me
You can have me if you want to

"Pretty Mess"

(written by Vanity,1984)

Ahh!...Here we go again falling on my bed and pulling on a pillow
Well I think you got what it takes to get me boiling like a kettle
Here everything's boiling up
I boil to the maximum,yeah
Well I do believe babe, you boil me bubbling
You get me in so much trouble

Ooh and baby someday soon
I will take you there
Promise you the moon
And then he pulled a seam and it went all the way

(chorus)
Ooh yeah,such a pretty mess
He made such a pretty mess on my dress
Ooh yeah,such a pretty mess
Such a pretty

Here we go again, pulling on my hair
I'm dripping like a hot tea
I'm aware if you drip it too hot
It just might spill all over this lovely
Here everything's boiling up
I boil to the maximum,yeah
Well I do believe babe, you boil me bubbling
You get me in double trouble

Ooh and baby someday soon
I will take you there
Promise you the moon
And then I took a drink and it went all the way

(chorus)
Ooh yeah,such a pretty mess
We've made such a pretty mess of my dress
ooh yeah,such a pretty mess
Oh such a pretty

Here we go again, crawling through the kitchen...oh ho ho hum
I bet you got what it takes to get me into a living room position

Ooh and baby someday soon
I will take you there
Promise me the moon
And then he found a hallway that went all the way

(chorus)
Ooh yeah,such a pretty mess
He made such a pretty mess of my dress
Ooh yeah,such a pretty mess
Oh it's such a pretty

I doubt it.I have an old vinyl copy, which is where I was able to get the lyrics to those two songs. It's printed on the sleeve.

btw,a few weeks ago,I was visiting the message boards at Motown's official site, and someone asked about a possible Vanity "Greatest Hits" compilation. The guy who's responsible for many of Motown's compilations (reissue producer Harry Weigner) commented that they've actually considered a project like this, but it probably won't happen. For one thing,Vanity only recorded two albums for Motown, and neither album yielded any big hits.As far as I can tell, she only released four moderately successful singles...

"Pretty Mess" (1984)
"Mechanical Emotion" with Morris Day (1984)
"Under The Influence" (1986)
"Animals" (1986)

For good measure, you could throw a couple of soundtrack songs on the compilation too...

"7th Heaven" (from "Berry Gordy's "The Last Dragon" movie soundtrack,1985)
"Faraway Eyes" (from the 'Action Jackson" movie soundtrack,1988)(with permission from Atlantic Records)
"Undress" (from the "Action Jackson" movie soundtrack,1988)(with permission from Atlantic Records)

And they would have to pad the CD out with some key album tracks, such as...

"Samuelle"(1984) (many of her fans liked this song, and have speculated that the lyrics are about Prince)
"Wild Animal" (1984)
"Gun Shy" (1986)

and if they could possibly get permission from Warners to use a few Vanity 6 tracks (not likely),they could add...

"Nasty Girl"
"He's So Dull"

So,a Vanity Greatest Hits CD could look like this....

UNDER THE iNFLUENCE: THE BEST OF VANITY

"Nasty Girl" (full-length album version)
"He's So Dull"
"Pretty Mess" (extended 12" version)
"Mechanical Emotion" (full-length album version)
"Samuelle"
"Wild Animal"
"7th Heaven"
"Under The Influence" (extended 12" version)
"Animals"
"Gun Shy"
"Faraway Eyes"
"Undress"

Most likely. They probably own all the rights.

Yeah, I remember that the lyrics were on the record sleeve. I just have a cassette copy. SOMEWHERE -- hope I find it, because I really like the album.

I have mixed feelings about that album, although a few tracks ("Mechanical Emotion" and "Samuelle") are impressive.

Yeah, I think we discussed it once long, long ago. I love it. Pretty goofy in some moments, but a great document of 80's Sexy Pop. And Mechanical Emotion and Samuelle are brilliant.

a vanity greatest hits cd would be cool. Samuelle was definately the best track off of Wild Animal. how was Skin on Skin? i haven't gotten arond to finding a copy, but what i've heard was pretty good.

'Skin On Skin' is a much stronger, more focused album than 'Wild Animal'.I heard that, after the first album flopped,Motown really kept an eye on the recording of the second album. They paired Vanity with different producers/songwriters,and the end result is an album that's more tuneful, and less self-indulgent than 'Wild Animal'.Another thing is,her vocals are more tolerable on 'Skin On Skin'.Listen to the first single "Under The Influence"...she's actually holding a note this time around!

I always laugh when I play the "Wild Animal" album. It's a really cheesy and silly album, and I have to wonder if Vanity herself was serious...lol...songs like "Flippin Out" and "Crazy Maybe" are bizarre,to say the least. And the lyrics are...well....let's just call them "unique",lol...but it's a fun album,a good slice of mid-80s pop cheesiness, just like the Apollonia 6 album.
