Grace

"Grace" was the b-side to "777-9311". It seems not many people r aware of this song. I still have my 45. I've been told it's a very rare 45. And it seems that way since not many P or even Time fans have heard of it. It's similar 2 "If A girl Answers" in the sense that it's nothing but talking over the music of "777-9311". What's so cool about it is Morris and J.J. r on it. It's very slick. J.J. of course sounds so good on it. Do any of u have the song or have ever heard it?

What a coincidence, I just bought the promo 12" on ebay a few weeks ago! And I finally listened to "Grace" for the very first time last night. I was wondering whom the female voice was. I like it better than "Tricky" which was mostly Prince doing his Morris voice throughout.

shocked

I like Tricky. But I consider Tricky a Prince song. It's basically him making fun of Morris Day who had left The Time. I have an interview from MTV with Morris Day on video. It was conducted at the time where he had just released the Daydreaming album. The host asked Morris who Tricky was about. He looked kinda funny in the face and didn't answer the question. lol

YEAH, "TRICKY" IS ANOTHER TAKE OFF ON "GRACE" BUT BETTER. pRINCE DOES HIS MORRIS VOICE ON TRICKY LIKE U SAID AND ALSO ON "IF A GIRL ANSWERS". BUT ON "GRACE", IT'S MORRIS DOING MORRIS AND J.J. JUST BEING HER FINEASS SELF. MAN, PRINCE WAS AN IDIOT 2 LET JILL SPLIT. I THINK I WOULD HAVE MARRIED THAT GIRL.

I have the 12" vinyl for both Tricky & Grace, bought them back when they came out; I prefer Tricky.

How do we know that's Jill as "Brigitte" in Grace???

Yeah, how do we know that is Jill on "Grace"? It doesn't really sound like her to me.

And where did "Tricky" appear (i.e. B side to what)? How could it have been after Morris left? The music kinda sounds like "Irrisitble Bitch" although not exactly. And I think Morris is on there too laughing at Prince's shenanigans.

And "If A Girl Answers" has its own music to my knowledge.... I dont' know what else shares that riff.

YOU ALL ARE WRONG... razz Tricky is NOT about Morris, it's about George Clinton. The opening of Tricky is Morris, and then Prince takes over "imitating" Morris (for lack of a better description.) That is NOT Jill Jones on Grace. I don't know who it is, but it's not Jill Jones, it sounds nothing like her (what stereo are you listening to?) Tricky is NOT a take off on Grace (Hello?) It's a continuation of the 777-9311 theme (obviously). If anything you need to be comparing Tricky with Cloreen Baconskin, which is from the same session.

IT'S EITHER IN THE BOOK "POP LIFE" OR "D.M.S.R." BOOK, I READ THAT IT WAS J.J. IN ONE OF THOSE BOOKS. I DIDN'T KNOW WHO IT WAS EITHER, UNTILL I READ IT. AND SERVEITUP, WHAT KIND OF DUMBASS QUESTION IS "WHAT STEREO ARE YOU LISTENING TO"? WHAT KIND DO U THINK? THE KIND WITH SPEAKERS, AND A TURNTABLE. AND I HAD ALREADY SAID OUT THE GATE THAT "GRACE" WAS JUST THE MUSIC OF 777-9311 WITH TALKING. AND "GRACE" IS SIMILAR 2 "TRICKY" IN THE SENSE THAT THERE IS A LOT OF COMEDIC CLOWNING. AND WAS "CLOREEN" EVER RELEASED AS A B-SIDE. NO.

And I think you mean "Grace" is related to 777-9311 (obviously) but Tricky is completely different> (I'm ashamed to admit I don't kinow anything about Cloreen baconskin. WHat is that?)

I think "Tricky" was the B-side to the "Ice Cream Castles" single.Am I correct?

But yeah,I remember "Grace"! In my area, many of Prince and The Time's B-sides got just as much airplay as the regular singles.I remember our local R&B station (KSOL) used to mix "Grace" with "777-9311"...they would play "Grace" first, then segue right into the full-length album version of "777-9311".To those of you who are not familar with "Grace"....it's just an interview/skit where a woman is asking Morris Day a bunch of questions, while an instrumental version of "777-9311" plays in the background.Of course,Morris gives alot of badass answers. He encourages the fellas to get rid of the jeans and the new wave clothes and "go and get yourself some baggies".At one point he says...

"Funk is something you can learn in school, and ain't nothin' funky about being cool" lol

The lady interviewing him isn't too pleased with his answers, telling him "I don't think I like you at all".But that still doesn't stop her from giving him her phone number at the end...lol...

There was a rumor going around that "Tricky" was about Alexander O'neal, who was the original Time lead singer that supposedly had disputes with Prince during the band's creation.

Hi there,

here are some additional infos about the songs mentioned in this topic:

* "Grace" based on the drum & bass line of "777-9311" and the female vocal is not Jill, it's Vanity.
* "Tricky" is about George Clinton
* "Cloreen Bacon Skin" and "Tricky" are not from the same recording session

And here are the full recording and writing credits:

Grace (2:37)
originally recorded May/June 1982 by Prince at at his home studio • performed by Prince (all instruments) with Morris Day (lead vocals) and Vanity (co-lead vocals) • written by Prince (uncredited) • registered to Prince (as Jamie Starr) • finally released 1982 on the USA 7"-single "777-9311" and on the USA promo 12"-single "777-9311"

Cloreen bacon skin (15:37)
originally recorded at 26th-27th March 1983 by Prince with Morris Day & Jesse Johnson at Sunset Sound during the Ice Cream Castle album sessions • performed by Prince (bass & lead vocals) with Morris Day (drums) • written by Prince • finally released 1998 on the Artist's album "Crystal Ball"

Tricky (3:11)
originally recorded February 1984 by Prince with Morris Day at Sunset Sound • performed by Prince (all instruments & lead vocals) with Morris Day (drums & additional voices) • written by Prince with Morris Day • registered to Prince (as Jamie Starr) with Morris Day • finally released 1984 on the USA 7"-single "Ice cream castles", on the UK 12"-single "Ice cream castles" and on the GER 12"-single "Jungle love"

Peace

I always thought Grace was Vanity also.
and what about the girl on one of the songs saying "that was the worst concert I have ever been to." Morris is talking about her being big or fat and her pants were painted on and when her pants came off, he was like "dayum baby how did all of that get in there?"
I always thought that was Vanity as well.

I don't know who says it (I don't think it's Vanity) but the "That was the worst concert I've Ever been to" is from "Wild and Loose". A similar thing happens in "Jerk out" ..... a girl says "Who ever told you you coudl sing??"

The whole skit about taking thepants off and then "How'd you fit all that in there" IS Vanity... and is from "The Walk". Vanity 6 are credited as backing vocals on the song.

Please dont' take this the wrong way.... I'm just trying to clarify your comment.

So you're saying that in your opinion it's Vanity right? Or do you have an actual source or info that you're basing this on.

Cuz in DMSR, Per Nilson lists credits for "uncredited" things..... like he says it's Prince on "Grace" even though clearly that's not an "official" credit, but lists the female voice as "uncredited", even though technically both are uncredited.

I don't think it sounds like Vanity really....this woman has a deeper quality to her voice. Maybe Jill playing a part or else some other woman who hung around at the time. The thing is I have a total picture in my head of what this Brigitte looks like..... kinda like the type of guest star you'd see on a UPN comedy playing a TV reporter..... beautiful, tall, light-skinned black woman with long full hair, 5 inch hells etc.. smile
