David Coleman passed away I learned this morning that David Coleman (Lisa's brother) recently passed away. He was a very talented musician who opened up Prince to new sounds and new vibes. He wrote ATWIAD, and although Prince changed the lyrics, the final tune sounded the same as David envisioned it. Pretty impressive to have written the title tune for the album Prince refered to as his most "avant purple" disc. In fact, many of the odd instruments that were introduced to Prince's music during that time were introduced by David.
David also recorded with Lisa and Wendy on many of their solo tracks. On top of that, David was a very fun and open person. I had the honor of interviewing him for an article in UPTOWN two years ago and I found him very personable and friendly. He will be missed by his many fans and friends. Wendy and Lisa have both suffered a great deal with the loss of David and with the loss of Wendy's brother Jonathan a few years ago. Those of us at UPTOWN wish them well during this tough time. This was a while back, before Emancipation. I think that The Love We Make was at least partially inspired by his death. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Nooooo that was Jonathan Melvoin who died in 1996 Wendy's brother. This is David COLEMAN and it didn't happen all that long ago.

God Bless the Coleman and Melvoin families. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

So sad. He wasn't very old -- does anyone know what the cause was?
My thoughts and prayers are with the Coleman family. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

Didn't he dedicate "Sometimes It Snows In April" to David Coleman at the Staples Center concert?
I got him confused with Jonathon Melvoin too because after playing that song, he said it was dedicated to Coleman & I remember thinking "Why are you dedicating a song to someone who passed away 7 years ago now?"

I know poor Lisa. I wondering too what is the cause of his death? I been looking everywhere of getting addition info but to no avail. I heard he was like a year younger than Prince still in my eyes he died very young. My symaphy does goes out to Lisa (and Wendy, I pretty sure Dave was a like a brother to her) and the Coleman/Ynda family.

Yes he did. Shows what I know - when he said that I thought that meant he had written it for David way back when. Guess not. I wonder WHO sometimes was inspired by.. hmm.

Man the last thing Wendy and Lisa need is more tragedy in or around the family.
My heart goes out to them both and David will be missed. Glad to hear Prince hadn't forgotten him. Rest in !
