Prince & Friends Compilation OK so I don't know how many people have seen this CD for Rick James called Rick James and Friends released by Priority Records in 1991, but I think it is quite a precise best-of-the-best/casual fan compilation.
01. Super Freak 02. You and I 03. In My House - MARY JANE GIRLS 04. Ebony Eyes 05. Square Biz - TEENA MARIE 06. Mary Jane 07. Give It to Me Baby 08. 17 09. All Night Long - MARY JANE GIRLS 10. Bustin' Out (On Funk) 11. Fire and Desire - with TEENA MARIE My question is, what are the most popular hits from Prince, The Time, Sheila E, and his other associates... and how would you assemble a similarly 11 track mix for the ultra-casual consumer? Given Prince had more "friends" (Apollonia 6, The Family), and the daunting task of balancing their hits against his... here's what mine might look like: 01. When Doves Cry 02. 1999 03. 777-9311 - THE TIME 04. Raspberry Beret 05. Glamorous Life - SHEILA E. 06. Jungle Love - THE TIME 07. Nasty Girl - VANITY 6 08. Let's Go Crazy 09. Little Red Corvette 10. A Love Bizarre - with SHEILA E. 11. Kiss

Little Red Corvette 10. A Love Bizarre - with SHEILA E. 11. Kiss I would take of ALL of the Prince tracks and just put the "friends". Or maybe make it a two disc set- first disc the "friends" then the second disc Prince's versions. I would put both Prince written songs for others and covers if I could (in a perfect world with no contractual entanglements): 01. Nothing Compares 2 U: The Family 02. I Feel For You: Chaka Khan 03. When U Were Mine: Cindy Lauper 04. Manic Monday: The Bangles 05. 777-9311: The Time 06. The Bird: The Time 06. Sex Shooter: Vanity Six 07. Nasty Girl: Vanity Six 08. The Glamorous Life: Sheila E. 09. A Love Bizarre: Sheila E. 10. Kiss: Tom Jones 11. If I Was U're Girlfriend: TLC 12. Pray: MC Hammer 13. Nothing Compares 2 U: Sinead O'Connor I'm sure there are more but bookending it w/ the two versions of NOTHING COMPARES 2 U would be fun.

A friend of mine made a 6 CD compilation of Prince's proteges and associated artists...
WOW...the stuff on there is AMAZING. Unfortunately, we've decided to keep it under wraps till after May 22. Stay tuned for the big UNVEIL. It truly is AMAZING. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I think I would want to put songs that Prince wrote AND produced, like.. Jamie Starr or Alexander Nevermind- shit! I forgot "Sugar Walls" by Sheena fucken Easton!

U forgot Apollonia 6 Sex Shooter. Even better would be the Vanity 6 verison. Even better than that would be both on the same disc! If it doesn't fit, it's ugly anyway.

A few years ago, I made a two-hour comp of Jamie Starr/Paisley Park artists called 'The Very Best of Paisley Park.' I still listen to it often to this day. The tracklist:
1. Nasty Girl - Vanity 6 2. 777-9311 - The Time 3. The Glamorous Life - Sheila E 4. Sex Shooter - Apollonia 6 5. The Screams Of Passion - The Family 6. 100 MPH - Mazarati 7. 6 - Madhouse 8. Mia Bocca - Jill Jones 9. Wouldn't You Love To Love Me? - Taja Sevelle 1. Simon Simon - Dale 2. Love Explosion - Three O'Clock 3. Got A New Love - Good Question 4. Higher Than High - Tony LeMans 5. Round And Round - Tevin Campbell 6. Hippy Blood - Ingrid Chavez 7. Go Go Dancer - Carmen Electra 8. The Voice - Mavis Staples 9. Paint The White House Black - George Clinton I left off T.C. Ellis because I didn't feel he represented the very best of Paisely Park. Almost all the songs were extended versions which is what stretched it out to two hours. Everyone was allowed one track only. Songs by Prince for artists outside of Paisley Park (like Sheena Easton) are relegated to a separate comp.

If it doesn't fit, it's ugly anyway.

Yep, Fantasia Erotica would be my favorite Carmen song, followed by
Everybody Get On Up, then Go-Go Dancer. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

12. Pray: MC Hammer
I prefer this sample or 'version' to the Prince song! Of course, both are very different other than the sample, otherwise they ain't related at all! Hammer also covered or sampled ala "Pray", "Soft and wet" from the same album! I love "Pray", good to see Hammers name on here! Credits to one of his albums say recorded at Paisly park! I know many non Prince assosiates did record there, but I wonder if they ever recorded together? Both were religious back then (though diffrent beliefs now of course)! Anyway.....

I missed this the first time otherwise I would have said Hammer so does not deserve to be on any Prince-related comp. If you're looking for a decent incarnation of "When Doves Cry," check out Quindon Tarver's version from the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack.
