Keenan HS grad, drummer for Prince awarded key to Columbia (Columbia) May 12, 2004 - The City of Columbia honored a native son who has showcased his talents around the world. In April, WIS News 10 followed drummer John Blackwell as he stopped by his alma mater, Keenan High School. John eventually went to Berklee College of Music in Boston after graduating from Keenan in 1991. Blackwell's skills earned him a spot as the drummer with Prince and the New Power Generation four years ago. He was in town for a concert with the Grammy award-winning group last month. The City of Columbia presented him with a key to the city at City Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Blackwell was with his wife, two kids and other family members for the special presentation. He thanked the people of Columbia for supporting him while he pursued his dreams, "This is a dream come true for me to come home and be honored this way and perform in front of all my family and friends and natives of Columbia." Blackwell says he plans to setup a scholarship for students at midland schools so they can pursue their dreams too. Updated 6:12pm by Chris Rees | |

Amazing guy, amazing drummer John is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. he is an absolute gentleman and knows his craft VERY well. I respect him very much and Prince should be proud to have such a great guy in his camp. I dont knw if you guys know but i first saw John play with CAMEO and he was straight killing those grooves. I was like "Dang, this drummer is HOTTT!" Way to go J.B. you deserve all of the accolades that are in search of you Bran Which came first , music or the ear for it? | |
